As both a Windows and non-Windows user/developer I personally don't
follow most of the recommended/default installation if I can help it. I
avoid installing into /usr/local, /usr, "C:\Program Files", or whatever
else the default is. Such defaults are usually just impediments to
getting repeatable and isolated install results for development and
testing. But I guess that just the configuration manager in me babbling.
So I'll shut up now ;-)
