cool, that's more like what I was looking for!

especially 
http://boost.2283326.n4.nabble.com/template/NamlServlet.jtp?macro=adv_search_page&node=2553779 
provides a way to search by subject. seems to ignore square brackets 
just like the other pages and doesn't seem to have threaded display, but 
at least i can sort by date.
