This sort of thing has been discussed many times on this list already,
under the name clone_ptr. I would expect many people to be familiar with
Boost list run by bdawes at acm.org, gregod at cs.rpi.edu, cpdaniel at pacbell.net, john at johnmaddock.co.uk
