I don't think that's the sentiment. The thought I hear more often is
that it's almost impossible to earn a living with OSS development.

That could, minimally, provide some funds for people. The logistics
would be a bit complicated though.

There are at least 103 BoostORG members. Probably a fair number are
not active -- and at least one passed away :-( But to give you an idea
of how direct financing does and does work..

The C++ Alliance employs/pays a handful (8) of Boost programmers. And
the benefits are clear. As what they work on is getting improvements
(hash containers, json, url).

Others may try to get GitHub sponsorships to encourage their work.
