A perhaps useful data point is that people sponsor me for my minor 
contributions to Python, but they don't for my much larger (relatively 
speaking) contributions to C++.

Different cultures.

Back when I was working a contract writing in Rust people were a lot 
more generous with the money too. You couldn't live off it, but the 
cultural difference around money vs C++ was very obvious.
