Indeed, \verbatim only works for HTML and LaTeX output.
For XML output, one has to use \xmlonly ... \endxmlonly.

Nevertheless, the doxygen to boostbook stylesheet doesn't allow xml tags 
to pass through.
I filed a bug a provided a patch.
