Boost will be applying again as a mentor organization for the Google Summer of Code in 2008. To do this, we need mentors from the Boost community who are willing to help with the process. Mentors review student applications select the best students and projects for the year, then mentor students (usually one student per mentor) while they work on their projects throughout the summer. It's a fun way to share your knowledge of Boost, and it helps both the students and the Boost community. If you would like to participate as a mentor for GSoC this year, please e-mail me. Eigen vectors?

Hi all, I am very new to boost, and I thought I'd do some simple linear algebra examples to get started. I got some simple vector/matrix multiplications going with .../boost/numeric/ublas/vector.hpp and matrix.hpp. However, I didn't see any function in the documentation do find eigen values or to do factorizations or anything like that. Are those kinds of functions not included, or am I crazy and just missed them in docs? -- Thanks, David

Linear Algebra

I was trying to run one of the examples, and it was trying to include: #include <boost/numeric/bindings/atlas/clapack.hpp> I realized that I didn't have a bindings directory at all! After some looking around, I ended up here: http://news.tiker.net/dl/software/boost-bindings I un-tared it and put its 'bindings' folder in my .../boost/numeric folder. When I compiled the example again, I got hundreds of c:\program files\boost\boost_1_34_1\boost\numeric\bindings\traits\type_traits.hpp(26) : error C2894: templates cannot be declared to have 'C' linkage Am I going about this wrong? -- Thanks, David

[lambda] Lambda and operator overloading

Hi, I am trying to get this source code to work, no luck so far. It works ok if I use the non-lambda approach, but with lambda it fails to compile. Apparently, boost.lambda thinks I want the bitwise action when in fact I want the overloaded operator... Any ideas? Code is attached.

I'm wondering if the new thread safe implementation of signals guarantees atomic disconnects. line1: signal<void(), multi_threaded> sig; line2: thread t(sig); // Start a new thread which will emit "sig" line3: sig.connect(&some_func); line4: sig.disconnect(&some_func); line5: ... Am I guaranteed that some_func isn't called at line 5 or afterwards? Floating Point Utilities Review Result. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There were 6 positive reviews and no negative ones, so Johan Rade's Floating Point Utility library has been accepted into Boost. The main issues and topics that came up for discussion were: 1) A couple of minor bugs were uncovered relating to signed NaN testing when using the SSE2 registers, and deserialising NaN's: both were fixed during the review period. 2) We had a discussion about the usefulness or otherwise of signed NaN's and the changesign function: Johan agreed to drop support for these as the signbit of NaN's is not considered part of the NaN payload and need not be preserved by the compiler, this could usefully be summarised in a rationale: especially now that negative NaN's are not formatted with a "-" sign? 3) JM made a few quite fruitless suggestions about optimising away calls to memcpy: this should be documented in a rationale to prevent JM from making the same mistake again :-) 4) John Phillips raised the issue of finding these tools - making sure that they don't get lost amongst all the other special functions and "stuff" in Boost.Math. JM and Johan have agreed to work together to ensure this doesn't happen. 5) There were a couple of suggestions for a convenience function for installing the facets in a locale/iostream: Johan agreed to add this. 6) There was +1 vote for manipulators rather than flags to the facet constructors - further investigation suggested this was problematic in a header only library - so the suggestion was dropped. 7) There was one comment about the library not using quickbook for documentation: ideally it would be nice to see this fixed so that the docs integrate seamlessly with the rest of Boost.Math - but see #4 as well. Which DPI size for equations in HTML docs?
