The formal review of the Named Parameters library by David Abrahams and Daniel Wallin starts today and runs until Monday, November 22nd. The Named Parameters library provides a framework for writing functions that can accept arguments by name or by position. The use of named parameters can improve the readability of calls to these functions, especially when the functions have many parameters with default values. The Named Parameters library allows one to write a new_window function that allows a call such as: window* w = new_window("alert2", movable = true); The library is available in the Boost sandbox here: boost/named_params.hpp libs/utility And in the files area (login required): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/boost/files/named_params.zip Reviewers may wish to compare this solution to the named parameters already used by the Boost Graph Library, documented here: http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/doc/bgl_named_params.html Please send your reviews either to the Boost list or to me personally. [BBv2] "lib" prefix isn't added to static libraries in bbv2

I had to add a dirty hack to stage.jam in order to get "lib" prefix which is used to distinguish between static and import libraries on Windows. I modified virtual-target.add-prefix-and-suffix the following way. Is it ok? The Library ~~~~~~~~ Function Types library by Tobias Schwinger Available from the sandbox at: http://boost-sandbox.sourceforge.net/vault/ or the zip file is: http://boost-sandbox.sourceforge.net/vault/index.php?action=downloadfile&fi… This library provides a metaprogramming facility to classify, decompose and synthesize function-, function pointer-, function reference- and member function pointer types. For the purpose of this documentation, these types are collectively referred to as function types (this differs from the standard definition and redefines the term from a programmer's perspective to refer to the most common types that involve functions). The classes introduced by this library shall conform to the concepts of the Boost Metaprogramming library (MPL). The Function Types library enables the user to: * test an arbitrary type for being a function type of specified kind, * inspect properties of function types, * view and modify sub types of an encapsulated function type with MPL Sequence operations, and * synthesize function types. This library supports variadic functions and can be configured to support non-default calling conventions. Review Summary ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The function types review took place between the 6th and the 20th June 2005. There were 4 reviews, three reviewers made tentative "yes" votes. The review manager abstained. The reviewers took the view that the library was useful, but had issues with: * The naming and organisation of some components (particularly the tag types). * The scope of the test cases. * The documentation: in particular many reviewers had difficulty understanding the motivation behind the library, and felt that the documentation would put off many potential new users. Tobias and the reviewers alike have tried hard to correct this, but it's apparent that writing really clear documentation for this library is actually quite a difficult task (basically we've all been struggling to come up with really easy to understand terminology that can be applied here, what the library does isn't that hard to understand once you have "got it", but there is a lack of accepted terminology for what the library does which makes it hard to write documentation that will allow a newbe to "get it" in the first place). Proposed Changes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tobias has been very proactive in dealing with the issues that have come up during the review period, and has already published a list of proposed changes to address the reviewers concerns: http://lists.boost.org/boost/2005/06/29005.php http://lists.boost.org/boost/2005/06/29006.php http://lists.boost.org/boost/2005/06/29007.php Review Result ~~~~~~~~~~ There was some concern on the part of the review manager that not many reviews were submitted for this library. We don't have a hard and fast rule on how many positive reviews are enough to justify inclusion of a library, but there does seem to have been a decline in the number of reviews received for libraries recently. Partly this may be down to the fact that we have a release going on as well at present, also this library is probably mainly of interested to other library authors (who are busy with the release!). It's also possible that the problems some reviewers had in grasping all the concepts behind the library put some people off from contributing (this issue will be addressed by Tobias' proposed documentation changes however). So..... after some consultation with the other moderators (on how many reviews constitute "enough").... the result: the function types library is accepted into Boost, subject to a further mini-review to be conducted at a later time convenient to Tobias. The "mini review" will be conducted independently to the full review process; it's purpose will not be to reopen issues already addressed at this review, but to give reviewers a chance to: * Check the reorganised/renamed classes: there are enough changes here to make the library look-and-feel different even if the changes are actually largely cosmetic. It's important that we get this right, as meta-function naming can have a large (albeit subjective) impact on usability. * Check the revised documentation. As noted above, several people have had an attempt at revising this, and it's surprisingly hard to get right. [serialization] iterators to stl containers

Could boost::serialization developers give ideas how iterators to stl containers should be made serializable? Robert suggested that they be serialized after the container, they iterate over, gets serialized. So we would have A) code that serializes container B) code that serializes iterator I thought about defering B to execute in A using the Command pattern. So if B happens before A, B will send a function object to A and this object would be executed when A gets called. What problems might there be with this implementation? Ivan

[network] Boost.Network proposal v0.2

Fellow Boosters, this is an update on my proposal for a Boost.Network library, located in the Sandbox. The file is called network.tar.bz2 or network.zip, located in the pedro_lamarao folder. The library was downloaded by a few people; I'd like to talk to you if you actually tried to use it. The layout of the archive is the familiar boost directory layout, ready to be expanded on top of a boost release. It was worked on a CVS HEAD version of boost. Every new name was added into a boost::network namespace. Every file is licensed under the Boost License; I've already secured the copyright over the code with my employer, pending the formality in paper. BoostBook documentation is provided with a Jamfile.v2 for bjam, but with many sections still empty. There is currently a Tutorial and an Overview of the library; the References section is still just a skeleton. The documentation can be found here: http://mndfck.org/~pedro.lamarao/projects/boost_network/ The header layout is now more closely what I think should be in a formal proposal for standard networking IOStreams. Comments on this would be much appreciated. Examples are provided in subdirectories of the libs/example/ directory, each with a Jamfile for bjam. These examples are still far from what I think is possible to achieve, but already show some interesting coding patterns facilitated by the IOStream interfaces. The examples include: - Spirit based internet::abnf class, containing the standard ABNF rules; - Spirit based internet::uri class; - std::getline based http_response class; - Spirit based irc::message class; - threaded servers for the chargen, daytime, discard, echo, qotd and time protocols. Yes, I forgot to add license notes in every example file. I'll correct that in the next days. I'll complete the examples with an smtp_client application, based on an internet::message and an internet::smtp_transaction, and a length-prefixed "binary" protocol. The implementation of the IOStreams does no buffering or code conversion: this is the simplest case, and offers the worst performance possible by making a system call for each byte read from the network. On a fast machine with a 256 kbps link the overhead is difficult to notice; slower machines and/or faster links make it more evident. Adding buffering is easy, though, as I've done it before; I could throw a quick patch for someone interested in benchmarking it. Code conversion is trickier. -- Pedro Lamarão

Hi to all, I've just uploaded a new Shmem snapshot to Boost Vault. This version has some interesting new features so that users can use Shmem to build more complex IPC mechanisms. The documentation is also available in the usual place: http://ice.prohosting.com/newfunk/boost/libs/shmem/index.html New features: -> Some bugfixes as always -> Named objects can be now destroyed via pointer without using the name -> More internal checks to avoid incorrect types, bad alignments or bad pointers. -> Added new STL-like allocator: cached_node_allocator. This allocator has a configurable private cache of nodes. The halfway between node_allocator and private_node_allocator. -> Atomic shared memory creation/destruction with optional user initialization/destruction functor. This allows the design of more advanced IPC mechanisms. -> Shared memory creation and destruction unification in Unix/Windows. When last connected process calls "close()", the shared memory is destroyed. -> Memory mapped file wrapper and Shmem adapted to work with memory mapped files. Now you can get automatic persistence of the classes you create in memory. -> New inter-process mechanism: A process-shared message queue. This message queue has priority-based message reception, and can work in blocking, non-blocking and timed way. This is a practical example of how Shmem classes can be used to implement higher order IPC mechanisms. That's all. All comments and suggestions are welcome! Ion
