permission to merge for 1.44 release (boost/python)

I'd like to ask permission to merge boost/python and libs/python from the trunk into the release branch. The diffs are fairly small: http://cci.lbl.gov/~rwgk/tmp/boost_python_release_branch_merge_2010_07_12 Most changes have been in the trunk for a while (several weeks at least). The builtin_converters.hpp change is in the trunk for about a week. It only affects one platform, 64-bit Windows, on which it is very well exercised, far beyond the regular boost tests. It changes the behavior of Boost.Python under 64-bit Windows, therefore it seems important to me to merge the patch into the release as soon as possible; I'm guessing the number of users on this platform is currently very small but will increase significantly in the future. The module_init.hpp patch is in the trunk for a few days only but also extensively tested. It seems very unlikely to me that it could cause problems. Ralf

Does lock-free boost::shared_ptr<T> implementation exist?

Hi, I'm trying to find a production quality lock free reference counted pointer implementation and boost::shared_ptr seems promising. However boost::atomic_is_lock_free(shared_ptr) returns false on Windows. I'm going to try on SUSE linux soon. According to http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/libs/smart_ptr/shared_ptr.htm, Starting with Boost release 1.33.0, shared_ptr uses a lock-free implementation on the following platforms: GNU GCC on x86 or x86-64; GNU GCC on IA64; Metrowerks CodeWarrior on PowerPC; GNU GCC on PowerPC; Windows. Then why does boost::atomic_is_lock_free(shared_ptr) returns false? Is there any compiler flag that needs to be set? I also found another lock free reference counted pointer, atomic_ptr from Joe Seigh here http://sourceforge.net/projects/atomic-ptr-plus/files/ but it seems to support linux with GCC only. Documentation is also poor. -Anqing

Concept Traits Library

I discovered, from asking a question on the user NG, the Concept Traits Library ( mentioned at https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/LibrariesUnderConstruction#Boost.Conc… ) in the Boost sandbox by Terje Slettebø and Tobias Schwinger last dated almost 6 years ago. From e-mailing Terje Slettebø I discovered that he did not have time to work on it further or submit it to Boost, since he has been working in other areas for many years as part of his job. Tobias Schwinger's e-mail address was not in the documentation so I was not able to contact him. Other Boost TMP programmers also seemed to have helped to contribute to this library. How did this library slip under the raider, so to speak ? This is a fantastic library with many useful metafunctions for the TMP programmer. For my own particular use the operator metafunctions alone are incredibly useful, but there are many more metafunctions testing for many concepts covering the STL and MPL. The documentation is also very good and there is a complete set of tests. Have I missed anything in terms of other later libraries superceding the functionality that was in this one ? Are the techniques used in this library flawed in any way ? I would love to see this library as part of Boost, if just for the operator metafunctions, and have told Terje Slettebø so.

Questions regarding new visibility stuff

I found the page with the updated config documentation on the trunk. a) What happens if the library is being compiled as a static library? The documentation says that BOOST_SYMBOL_EXPORT is always defined. So can I assume that if a static library is being built then it's defined a empty? The serialization library now contains things like #ifdef BOOST_HAS_DECLSPEC // defined in config system Which I believe is undefined for when the library is being built statically. So things currently work. What do I replace the #ifdef above with - if anything. I believe that exporting symbols from an imported static library would create all sorts of interesting surprises. b) the serialization library contains ... #if defined(__BORLANDC__) #define BOOST_ARCHIVE_DECL(T) T __export #define BOOST_ARCHIVE_OR_WARCHIVE_DECL(T) T __export #else #define BOOST_ARCHIVE_DECL(T) __declspec(dllexport) T #define BOOST_ARCHIVE_OR_WARCHIVE_DECL(T) __declspec(dllexport) T #endif This addresses the fact that with borland, the placement of the __export and typename differs in sequence from the rest. I haven't tested borland in a long time and it's broken for the serialization library anyway (and no one has complained) so I suppose you can just ignore this - but I'd thought I'd mention it. c) When will these new macros get checked into the release branch? d) It turns out that I've had to deal with this a lot more than anyone would want to. In my case, I've divided the code into two separate libraries - serialization.dll and wserialization.dll. The second includes only those parts which depend on wide character types. The motiviation is that one only needs the part he is really using. Problems come up as wserialization import symbols from serialization so the import/export issue get's sort of complicated. User programs have the same issue as I've found in making dll/plugin tests. I don't have a real point here, just noting my experiences with this issue. Robert Ramey

Differences between 'trunk' and 'release' right before 1.44 code freeze

As far as I know, the code freeze for the 1.44 release is scheduled for tomorrow, July 12th. There are about 40 files that exist on the release branch only (do not, or no longer) exist on the trunk. Are these files that were deleted on the trunk and the deletions were never 'merged' to the release branch? There are almost 100 files that exist on the trunk that do not exist at all on the release branch. I'm confident that some of these are "works in progress", not ready for the 1.44 release. I'm also confident that others are work that should be in the 1.44 release - but I certainly can't tell the difference. There are also about 2000 files that differ (some in minor ways, some significantly) between the trunk and the release branch. If you fixed a bug during the bug sprint, you need to merge your changes to the release branch! Here's a list of the files that exist only "on one side". [fiber] with assembler

I've uploaded a new version of boost.fiber to boost vault. It provides assembler for x86 (32/64bit) - PowerPC and ARM are planed. Performance of the raw context-switch is 6-12 times faster than swapcontext(POSIX). Mutexes, condition- and event-variables suspend fibers waiting on those sync. primitives and can be shared by fiber running on different threads (schedulers).

library proposal : odeint

Hi, I proposed a library for solving ordinary differential equations some months ago. Since this time, we have worked a lot on this topic and we would like to start a discussion about the needs and the design of the library. The library odeint ("odeint" comes from integration of ordinary differential equations ) can be found in the sandbox and some preliminary documentation is also available: http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox/odeint/ http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox/odeint/libs/numeric/odeint/doc/html/… One of our main aims is the independence on a specific container or array type, such that the library can work with ODEs defined on arbitrary topologies, like networks, lattices , grids, etc. So, any comments on this library are highly welcome, as well as contributions (of any kind).
