There are breaking changes in 1.40 mersenne_twister.hpp. Is this in release notes? (Where are release notes?)

BCP module list from file
by Matthew Chambers 26 Aug '09

26 Aug '09

Hi, I'm automating the creation of a boost subset tarball with bcp and I had to add passing the module list in from a file because the list got so long (and of course piecemeal invocation results in a lot of redundant copying). Is this a feature that someone wants to patch into an official release? I'll attach the diffs; it was a very simple change but it makes the program scalable for larger projects. All the random zips I have downloaded over the past probably 2 years, probably 80% have been 7z. 7z has been included in all the *nix distro's I have used for the past few years, and most zip programs on Windows supports it just fine as well. 7z compresses a *lot* better then gzip/bzip/zip/etc... Takes more memory and time to do the initial compression, but is fast decompressing. I really doubt you would have any issues opening it, on my Kubuntu install I just click to open it, ditto with my windows.

[1.40.0] [threads] Unmerged threads changesets
by Beman Dawes 26 Aug '09

26 Aug '09

There are at least nine Boost.Threads changesets in trunk that have not been merged into the release branch. They date back to February. There are several multiple-platform trunk test failures that seem related to one or more of these changesets. I pinged Anthony yesterday about one of the changesets, but have had no reply. Given the above, plus the fact that 1.40.0 is really late already, I'm going to go ahead with the release without these changesets. --Beman

Plotting graphs in Scalable Vector Graphics format.
by Paul A. Bristow 26 Aug '09

26 Aug '09

Further to my post advertising Plotting graphs in Scalable Vector Graphics and inviting feedback, I am encouraged by the several ' looks neat' comments. I have now improved the documentation - and even reduced the number of typos a little ;-) (With several hundred options, effective documentation is uncommonly challenging). You will find a PDF documentation at https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox/SOC/2007/visualization/libs/svg_plo… /pdf/svg_plot.pdf And source at https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox/SOC/2007/visualization Boost Sandbox source code And, in case you were on vacation for my first post, some demo plots are attached for your amusement. Finally - I would like to ask how many of you were deterred from looking at the many examples of plots when you found that Microsoft Internet Explorer failed to render the files (unless you installed the Adobe SVG view add-in - and you couldn't be bothered to do that). Is this (lamentable) lack fatal to people's interest in SVG? Thank you. Paul --- Paul A. Bristow Prizet Farmhouse Kendal, UK LA8 8AB +44 1539 561830, mobile +44 7714330204 pbristow(a)hetp.u-net.com

Comparative analysis of Boost versus ACE
by Dhiman Lahiri 26 Aug '09

26 Aug '09

Hello, We are planning to port our Windows software on to Linux and we were thinking of Boost and ACE as alternatives. But I am not sure as to which one would suit our needs. The things we need from the library would be: 1) Threads, IPC 2) Shared memory abstraction 3) OS calls abstraction I would like to know which one would have a smaller memory footprint. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Dhiman Lahiri

Bug in lexertl library (in Spirit)
by Alejandro Rivero Pérez 25 Aug '09

25 Aug '09

Hi There is a bug in the lexertl library. This library is being used in spirit but being prepared for submission to boost as a separate library. The file consts.hpp contains the lines: const std::size_t num_wchar_ts = (boost::integer_traits<wchar_t>::const_max < 0x110000) ? boost::integer_traits<wchar_t>::const_max: 0x110000; Which should be: const std::size_t num_wchar_ts = (boost::integer_traits<wchar_t>::const_max + 1 < 0x110000) ? boost::integer_traits<wchar_t>::const_max + 1: 0x110000; Currently the lexer will cause a buffer overflow parsing a 0xffff value in a wchar_t buffer (assuming sizeof(wchar_t) is 2). Best regards, Alex

[task] functor passed to a boost::task::task not always destroyed?
by Harald Winroth 25 Aug '09

25 Aug '09

I wrote a short test program to check that each copy construction of a functor passed to a boost::task::task and boost::task::async was balanced by a corresponding destructor call. This is indeed the case when the task is run in a thread pool but it seems as if one destructor call is missing when the task is submitted to to boost::task::async with a boost::task::new_thread execution policy. Here is the a short test program and the resulting output. For comparison, the same functor is also passed directly to a boost::thread, which behaves as expected. The program was compiled using Visual C++ 2005 (SP1), and boost 1.39.0 with the latest Boost.Task library from the vault dropped in. Any ideas? Am I missing something?
