BoostCon 2008 -- Session Announcement

I'm happy to announce that the preliminary 2008 BoostCon program is on the web site. http://www.boostcon.com/program/sessions I'm quite pleased and excited with the program. We have tutorials and lectures on many core Boost libraries with topics including threading, serialization, networking, C++0x features, high performance generic programming, text processing, and more. We will also have a new 'Library in a Week' workshop to extend Boost.Algorithm. A new feature this year, based on feedback from last year, will be Author's Corner sessions where library authors discuss and answer questions about their libraries. And, finally, Bjarne Stroustrup with the keynote address. We hope to have the final program and schedule completed shortly. Note that while these sessions represent the bulk of the program we have a few more sessions in the works and are still looking for a couple more sessions to fill out the program. Proposed: a new sequence adapter for MPL (product_view)

I apologize in advance if something along these lines is already available; however current public documentation doesn't mention such a facility and a brief glance into SVN did not reveal one either... product_view Description: provides a view of a Cartesian product of multiple sequences. Modeled after zip_view in that it expects a sequence [of length n] of sequences S1...Sn as its argument and lazily generates a sequence [of length Prod{1...n}( size< Si > )] of sequences S1[1]...Sn[1] through S1[n]...Sn[n]. Whew... I know I can write better documentation than that if I put my mind to it :( I have attached a proof of concept implementation and a short test program. The code appears to compile and work with MSVC 2003 & 2008 and with GCC 4.2. It is not [yet] Boostified. My use case: I needed this adapter to write a dynamic dispatcher for a known set of template instances (poor man's dynamic template instantiation). Regards, ...Max...

The csr_graph_test test is failing on VC9 (http://tinyurl.com/3bbvvo) with the same error message as occurs on VC8 (http://tinyurl.com/3byxt3) which is marked as an expected failure. Should VC9 be marked as an expected failure as well? I guess that the existing markup should be extended to the 64bit VC8 as well (e.g. http://tinyurl.com/3dr3wy) Thanks, Richard Webb

[thread][1.35.0][trunk] New thread documentation

Hi, I've just checked in some new quickbook-based documentation for the much-revised thread library on trunk. I expect there's still some parts that are inadequate, but given the major changes since Boost 1.34, I want to ensure that the new docs are in with the new release. So, first question: is it OK to commit the new documentation to the release branch? Second question: I see that many libraries have the generated documentation checked in to SVN. Is this recommended practice? Next: The thread library documentation index at BOOST_ROOT/libs/thread/doc/index.html redirects to BOOST_ROOT/doc/html/thread.html, which in turn redirects to the generated version on the website. Is this still appropriate? Finally: Are there any glaring omissions that I ought to address before 1.35.0 is shipped? [xpressive] regex_replace() issue.

Hi, Currently I'm using Boost.Xpressive to search a string for variables that will be replaced by localized utf-8 encoded strings, in the format of $(variable_name). Because of this, I don't think I can simply use regex_replace(), since it takes a common regex that will be used to replace all matches, when in my case each match requires a special, unique replacement. Is there a way of doing this using Boost.Xpressive, or do I need to use a different component in the boost library? Is there a Xpressive 'replace' function that takes a functor, perhaps, and for each match it calls the function object and replaces the match with the return value of the functor? An example of a string that I'll be searching is below: "This string $(variable1) has localized $(var2) text interleaved for no $(reason)" In the string above, we have 3 variables. Each variable will reference a string in a localization table, which will then be used to replace the variable itself. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[filesystem] not_found_error unresolved external symbol on windows platform

Hi, guys! I had following problem when using boost::filesystem dynamically linked on windows platform: unresolved external symbol boost::filesystem::not_found_error. (By the way, this issue was raised up on users list some time ago, but had no resolution). According to dumpbin utility, mentioned symbol resides in boost_filesystem binary, so, I guess, there is some problem with macro magics (__declspec(dllimport/dllexport) ) in header file (operations.hpp). I'm building test application using Boost.Build: Boost.Build V2 (Milestone 11) Boost.Jam 03.1.16 and boost 1.34.1. Compiler is MSVC 9, but problem is reproducible on MSVC 8. The attached patch fixes the problem by defining BOOST_FILESYSTEM_DYN_LINK in usage requirements (in boost.filesystem's Jamfile.v2), but I'm wondering 1. why all the other symbols are successfully imported when mentioned macro is not defined 2. and why this macro wasn't defined in usage requirements by the author of the library. Could you please shed a light on this issue or correct me if I'm doing something wrong. Thanks. Sasha P.S. [quickbook][1.35]

Hi, There are two copies of the quickbook documentation in the release candidate - one in 'boost/tools/quickbook/doc/html' and one in the main generated documentation. The one in the generated documentation has a few broken links because they're releative to the 'tools' location. So can I remove it from the generated documentation from this release, and then if it needs to be added to the generated documentation, we can get that working for the next release? Daniel
