The documentation is good with many examples, but it took me several readings to "get it". I would like to see a section on debugging strategies and examples, particularly for Proto transforms. The display_expr() function could be documented with an example. Is there a way to create a "trace" of compiler messages, for something like the CalcArity example, where the compiler outputs warning messages as it does the mpl::max comparisons? I tried using techniques from the "C++ Template Metaprogramming" book, but couldn't get it to work. Any tools or techniques to help debugging would be appreciated. I couldn't find definitions for macros like BOOST_PROTO_EXTENDS_xxx, BOOST_PROTO_DEFINE_OPERATIONS, and BOOST_PROTO_AUTO. Also, proto::pod_generator isn't described anywhere. It would be helpful if the Concepts section were expanded with more definitions, because I kept getting confused about the precise meaning of grammar, transform, pattern, context, domain, generator, etc. > - What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? [proto] request for extending the review deadline

Hi! It is near end of the week now and I still have not worked through the transforms section nor the extends<> section - key features of the library, but only read them once. I am rather busy at present and have to perform this review at night ... Also I have had some trouble installing appropriate compilers (some ICEs with older gccs), gcc-4.3 not buildable on cygwin due to GNU MP build failure (gcc depends on MPFR depends on MP fails to configure). In addition to that I still have questions regarding the chapters I have intensively read so far, some of them will probably disappear once I start playing with the code. With regard to the complexity of proto and the programming power it reveals I would appreciate an extension of the review at least until easter tuesday (2008/03/25) or - if you can afford - until end of march. Of course I understand that this is probably too much to ask for, so if all others feel comfortable with proto already, do not hesitate to finish the review as planned. In that case I vote for "Yes", since at first glance I do not see anything that might hinder a rewrite of Daixtrose's compile time differentiation and simplify feature with proto and because AFAICS Eric addressed the most important issues of an ET library in an elegant and cute way (At present I do not agree with some design decisions, but that is rather a matter of taste). The docs - hard work! good quality! - of course need some extensions and modifications, but I first have to understand the lib before I post critique on the didactic structure of the docs. I think this is normal for a new library and Eric's aim at perfection is high enough to get things fixed even after proto is accepted. Markus Werle

boost-libraries should be independent from others?

Hello, I'll can remeber that in the list or on the web-site it was suggested that new boost libraries should be independent from other boost libraries. If this is still correct - I'm wondering because I wouldn't reinvent the threading, signaling etc. libraries. What do you think? regards, Oliver

customizing complex data structures such as graphs and meshes

I discovered an interesting pattern that makes it easy to customize elements in complex data structures. For example, customizing nodes and edges of a graph, or vertices edges and faces of a mesh. I found it interesting and wanted to share it. I have attached an example involving graphs, although I currently use it to customize 3D meshes. Maybe it is of interest to anyone. Yet another object factory announce! Sorry to announce another version, but I think "this is the last one" (tm) ;-) Small, easy to read, self-contained, feature complete, compiler friendly, and really really nice (at least for my coding style taste). I spent a lot of time polishing this toy. IMHO could be an example of C++ template programming for beginners/intermediate users. Interested people could find it in boost vault under the name factory_24_2_08.zip, of course any feedback is welcomed. Thanks for your attention Marco
