[type_traits] VC9/TR1 failures vs Boost

I've been running the Boost regression tests against VC9 with the beta TR1 feature pack, and raising some of the failures as bugs with MS. >From reading the standards, it seems that some of the test failures are in areas which have changed over time. The MS blog post @ <http://tinyurl.com/3b9ksc> mentions N2157 ( http://tinyurl.com/2r54lo ), so i assume that they're working on at least that revision. So, from the tests: -tr1_is_base_of_test (http://tinyurl.com/2hzmae) is failing because Boost thinks is_base_of<int, int> should be true and VC9 says it's false. n2157 has the example "is_base_of<int, int>::value // false", so VC looks correct here. -tr1_is_convertible_test (http://tinyurl.com/2dortk) has 2 sets of failures: 1) is_convertible<float,void>/is_convertible<void,void> are both false, and Boost expects both to be true. n2157 says "If To and From are void types, the result is true. However if only one of To or From is a void type, then the result is false", which is a change to the spec. In this case, both Boost and VC9 seem to be wrong in one case. 2)is_convertible<float,convertible_from<float&>> is_convertible<char,convertible_from<char&>> are both false. n2157 says "Given a type T, the TR1 is_convertible<T, T&>::value is true whereas this paper proposes false unless T is a non-volatile but const qualified type", which sounds like VC is correct here. Does anyone with a better grasp of the current requirements have any thoughts on this? Thanks, Richard Webb

Persistence - Multi Index Container

Hi All, A team in my development group is currently using a proprietary container with a functionality similar to the MultiIndexContainer except for an additional feature of using Memory Mapped File to store the container data. The proprietary container performance is poor with ot without using the mapped file. The memory mapped file feature is extermly important since the component must keep the entire state even if the system crushes. Inorder for them to use the Multi Index container they need some persistence feature. Serializing the container every 2 seconds or so is not possible since the container size will be too large (dozens of MB). Is there any solution or future plans to develop such a feature in the Multi Index Container and in other boost containers? Hi Jan, #1 I was browsing through the docs in trunk. First I noticed that the default constructor has the follwoing postcondition: capacity() == max_size() && size() == 0 I find that somewhat unfortunate that it allocates a huge amount of memory. It seems to me that it is too easy to do that by coincidence. The usual rule for std containers is to never allocate by default and anticipate a call to reserve() or the first element. It also seems to me that this will create problems when the container is used in containers that might use default construction. #2 I think it would be useful to add a predicate called is_linearized(), so one can check if this property holds. Also, if this do hold, I should be able the get fast iterators to this linear segment, perhaps by calling .base() on the iterators which then simply return a pointer (I know I can get the pointers by array_one(), but I would more often need the iterators). #3 I think it would be useful to add rotate() as a member function. AFAICT, it can in many times (if not all) be much faster than std::rotate() because it can simply move a few elements and then simply adjust the iterators. -Thorsten

Boost Lib Design Question - TR1

I was hoping to get some of your thoughts on best practices for TR1 usage in boost libraries (maybe there is already a recommendation that I haven't seen yet). I'd like for some of the libraries I'm working on in the sandbox to use the TR1 namespace wherever possible, since this seems more future proof than using the boost namespace. I understand how to use the TR1 namespace in boost so that it uses the TR1 implementation of the compiler provider if it exists, or the version of boost if it doesn't. For libraries in boost, I don't see a really "clean" way to do this as it seems it would require the user to add an additional include path beyond just the standard boost path (just like you do if you use it outside) to use my library. Is anyone trying to code their boost library to the TR1 namespace? How are you doing it? Thanks, Jared

[math - quaternions, octonions] Template parameter

The template parameter may be something else then "float", "double" or "long double"? If no then I think the documentation should state it clear and it seems to me that it does not at all. (From what I recall specification of std::complex for example explicitely prohibits other specializations then those three types.) Why all functions take parameter T as "T const&" even in specialization and not boost::call_traits<T>::param_type which would be most probably (so I susppect) non reference type? Adam Badura
