[RFC] Generic non-intrusive Visitor pattern utility

Hi It is often in my line of work that I need to perform several duties depending on the exact type (dynamic type) of a pointer/reference to base of a class hierarchy. This is done cleanly with a Visitor pattern aproach but usual implementations of Visitor (as far as I could see) are intrusive, meaning they require the original class hierarchy to have some Visitor API (usually in the form of a virtual function taking a pointer/reference to a base Visitor class). I find that undesirable because in my use cases at least, the design of the original class hierarchy does not need to know that it may be visited at some point nor does it care about that. Not to mention it is not very practical to modify the original hierarchy when you find out you need a Visitor (because it may be part of a separate project, you may not even have the sources to it). So I thought I need something non-intrusive to work on any class hierarchy one desires to use Visitor upon. An aproach solving this would be implementing a parallel class hierarchy that is Visitor aware (in the form of a template wrapper class instantiated by with the types visited), thus is nonintrusive but when actually implementing this, I noticed several draw backs: - using virtual functions it still imposes using some base class Visitor object and people have to use inheritance (which I don't think is really needed) - how to wrap the actual type is tricky, you may value aggregate it and then you require a working copy ctor of it (not always available or maybe expensive) or you may store pointers to it and then deal with the overhead of dynamic memory allocation just because of the design and one more indirection (neither of these required in the end) The final (best?) solution I came with now is using RTTI. They are easy to guess, TypeList is the usual TypeList (as in mr Alexandrescu's well known book), NullType is a incomplete type just to signal termination of the list and copy_cv is a type function that will add cv qualifiers of a type to another. It is used in the code where if the dynamic type is found, we need to static_cast the base type of the given parameter to that found dynamic type but we should static_cast by keeping the base type cv qualifiers. typedefs within Concept or as Trait?

This question doesn't pertain to a particular Boost library, so I apologize if it's too off-topic for the list. According to http://www.boost.org/more/generic_programming.html , the Associated Types of a Concept are either nested in the class definition, or accessed through a traits class. With iterators, traits were used because you can't nest typedefs within pointers, which are valid iterators in many cases. With containers (such as AssociativeContainerConcept), the Concepts require nested typedefs. My questions are - when creating your own library, when do you choose nested typedefs over a traits class, and what effects does it have on a library user, both from a usability and extensibility point of view. Hello, Some time ago (I think it was november or december), it was mentioned somewhere that the 1.35.0 would be targeted for the end of 2007. Obviously it hasn't been released yet. What is the expected date at which boost 1.35.0 will be released? Our project is currently using 1.33.1, and I'm trying to decide if we should wait for 1.35, or go for 1.34 for now. From searching, this was last discussed in Sep 2003, but didn't come to an adequate conclusion - and things have changed since then anyway. Including prg_exec_monitor.hpp on VS2005 produces the following warning: execution_monitor.ipp(216) : warning C4535: calling _set_se_translator() requires /EHa It is my opinion that the use of _set_se_translator here is a mistake for the following reasons: 1. It doesn't achieve what it's trying to achieve if my test involves multiple threads. The translator is thread specific and there is no way for my thread function to apply the translator (especially not when I may not have access to the thread function). 2. It requires the use of /EHa which has an effect on the code being run. Code under test should be run using the same options as release, and /EHa is not appropriate for (most) release code. 3. If I've really triggered a system fault then I can no longer trust the state of my app, so I cannot rely on it to correctly report its problem. I may have just destroyed the stack, attempting to unwind is just going to cause more problems - system errors should be handled externally. I accept that others may prefer the simplicity of trying to handle system failures internally, so I propose changing to execution_monitor.ipp to only define BOOST_MS_STRUCTURED_EXCEPTION_HANDLING if BOOST_NO_MS_STRUCTURED_EXCEPTION_HANDLING is not defined: # ifndef BOOST_NO_MS_STRUCTURED_EXCEPTION_HANDLING # define BOOST_MS_STRUCTURED_EXCEPTION_HANDLING # endif I will then carry out my testing after running something like: "Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows\cdb" -iaec "-c \".lines;!analyze -v;kP 4;q\"" to catch system errors. I created a "bounded_iterator" concept that seems really useful. A bounded_iterator behaves just like a regular iterator, except that the termination condition can be checked by just casting the iterator to a bool. Here's an example: int array_range[] = { 1, 1, 2, 3, 5 }; for (bounded_iterator<int *> i(array_range); i; ++i) { std::fill_n(std::ostream_iterator<int>(std::cout), *i, *i); } I like it for the same reason that I like iterator_range: it frees the developer from having to worry about both a begin and an end iterator. It can be used as a wrapper for operations on a container or a sub-range. Just like iterator_range simplifies the invocation of functions for ranges, bounded_iterator simplifies the traversal of ranges. In my application I was storing lots of iterators in containers, and using bounded_iterator proved to be a better abstraction than storing iterator pairs or ranges. The main disadvantage to using a bounded_iterator is that it competes with the standard iterator concept, and it's usually more confusing to support many ways to do the same thing. Hi, yesterday bug #1550 which was opened by me (and has me in CC: too!) was closed but I still miss an associated mail. Can you please check the mail log whether the mail was rejected? It happened in the past that mails could not be delivered to me if a postmaster account is missing on the server. Can you check this? What is the problem? (Yep, I checked my SPAM folder.) Jens
