Runtime error when try to stop boost thread
by 申和平 26 Jan '08

Hi, all I got a runtime erro when try to stop a boost thread. I created a class(listed below) to wrap boost thread, and used it like this: ThreadWrapper tw(1);//delay 1 seconds tw.start(); … tw.stop(); When I called the function “stop”, a runtime error jump out said access conflict when running the line(in once.cpp,Line 163): HANDLE mutex = CreateMutexA(NULL, FALSE, strm.str().c_str()); I’ve tried the class in two MFC project. One has error, and the other one ran correctly. How strange! Is it a bug of boost? Please help me. //========================================================================== == #include <boost/thread.hpp> #include <boost/bind.hpp> class ThreadWrapper { public: ThreadWrapper(unsigned delySec=0) { m_delySec = delySec; m_pause = false; m_stop = false; } public: virtual ~ThreadWrapper(void) { } protected: boost::mutex m_mutex; boost::condition m_cond; bool m_stop; bool m_pause; unsigned m_delySec; public: virtual void start() { boost::thread mtth(boost::bind(&ThreadWrapper::run, this)); } virtual void pause() { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lock(m_mutex); m_pause = true; m_cond.notify_one(); } virtual void resume() { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lock(m_mutex); m_pause = false; m_cond.notify_one(); } virtual void stop() { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lock(m_mutex); m_stop=true; m_cond.notify_one(); //I tried join, but still got the same error } virtual void run() { while(m_stop == false) { if (m_pause == true) { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lock(m_mutex); while(m_pause == true) { m_cond.wait(lock); } } boost::xtime xt; boost::xtime_get(&xt, boost::TIME_UTC); xt.sec += m_delySec; boost::thread::sleep(xt); } } } //========================================================================== ==

[mpl][documentation]bug: refmanual/protect.html typedef without identifier
by Larry Evans 25 Jan '08

25 Jan '08

http://www.boost.org/libs/mpl/doc/refmanual/protect.html contains: typedef bind<_1, protect< bind<f,_1,_2> > > which contains no 'identifier ;'. OOPS, I missed the FIXME at top of example. However, putting that FIXME in read would help other's see it.

Is there any interest in a template geometry library?
by Barend Gehrels 25 Jan '08

25 Jan '08

Hi, Is there any interest in a template geometry library? The library we are developing is basic 2D geometry library. In this library, data structures are small and simple (but polygons can still have holes). Nevertheless, the library provides a lot of useful algorithms such as point-in-polygon, line intersections and polygon clipping. We at Geodan are developing our library since 1995, and recently restructured, simplified and enhanced the geometry core. Now that it is clean and well designed, and still with years of experience, we aim to publish it in Boost under the Boost Software License. To give some impressions, points are like this: template <typename T> class point { (...) inline const T& x() const (...) inline const T& y() const (...) }; and lines are completely empty, like this: template <typename P> class linestring : public std::vector<P> { }; (Besides that you can also specify another container). Data and algorithms are separated, so there are algorithms like: template <typename P, typename POL> bool point_in_polygon(const P& p, const POL& pol); and like this: template <typename S1, typename S2, typename MP> intersection_result intersection_segment(const S1& segment1, const S2& segment2, MP& multipoint); but also generic wrappers like a "within" algorithm which is defined for all relevant geometry types template <typename P1, typename P2> inline bool within(const P& p, const polygon<P2>& poly) Because the library is completely templatized, you can use your own geometry types, and/or container types (provided that they follow the basic interface). The library follows std:: and boost:: standards and conventions, as well as the OGC (The Consortium on Standards in Geographical Information Systems) conventions. I know there have been discussions before on geometry libraries and on CGAL, e.g. http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/03/117582.php. We are using boost in our library since about 2000. If there is interest I will complete the documentation and examples according to Boost standards, and prepare a submission. Hi, boost::system contains an posxi_error enumeration with element success = 0. Woldn't it make sense to add also an element eof (related to network libraries: end of streamed socket == socket was closed by peer)? best regards, Oliver

BoostCon 2008 Now Open For Registration
by David Abrahams 25 Jan '08

25 Jan '08

Hi All, The 2nd annual Boost Conference has been scheduled for May 4-9 2008. Please see http://www.boostcon.com/registration for registration information. If you want to stay at the Aspen Meadows (highly recommended as it is within walking distance of the conference venue and was the site of great after-hours discussions in '07), it's especially important this year that you book your rooms early. Since, unlike last year, Aspen's airport will be open this May, demand for rooms has been heavy. In fact, the following week, which we tried to get, was snapped up by another group before we even had a chance to catch our breath, just weeks after BoostCon'07 ended. We'll be working hard on getting the program together for 2008 over the coming weeks. We hope to include many more Boost authors and contributors, and build in several more intensive library-specific sessions, to make 2008 better than ever. Please send any questions to the BoostCon planning committee at: organizers(a)boostcon.com. Those of you who didn't make it to BoostCon'07 may want to have a look at the photo gallery at http://boostcon.com/community/photos, peruse the 2007 program at http://boostcon.com/program, and check out the two trip reports mentioned here: http://boostcon.com/news/2007/Jul/16/yet-another-trip-report. See you in Aspen! -- The BoostCon Planning Committee

[review] Review of Flyweight library
by David Sankel 25 Jan '08

25 Jan '08

* What is your evaluation of the design? It looks very well designed and I especially find the flexibility of the policy mechanism to be very well done. * What is your evaluation of the implementation? I haven't looked at much code, so I have no opinion here. * What is your evaluation of the documentation? I found the documentation to be comprehensive and with good flow. * What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? In my programming career I haven't encountered a use case for this library. That isn't to say it wouldn't be useful in other domains. * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? Nope, didn't try it. * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? I did an in depth study of the documentation only. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? I wasn't before I read the documentation, but I feel knowledgeable now after going through it. * Do you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library? Be sure to say this explicitly so that your other comments don't obscure your overall opinion. Yes, I do. My preference on the equality mechanism would be to make it a configuration option via a template parameter during construction with the default being (fw1.get()==fw1.get()) instead of (&(fw1.get())==&(fw1.get()). The benefit would be that those who would understand when this would fail could enable the quicker behavior while those who don't understand could remain in blissful ignorance. I prefer the original configuration mechanism. I think that it, combined with the very good documentation, is good enough and further extensions would complicate things further. [1.35] Release branch status
by Ion Gaztañaga 25 Jan '08

25 Jan '08

Hi, The release branch was created some time ago, and Interprocess and Intrusive were just copied from the trunk since they are new libraries for Boost 1.35. Meanwhile, I've been committing some fixes and improvements to the trunk branch. Both release and trunk branch regression seem to be ok. I still see several issues in the release branch and I don't know when we plan to release 1.35 so I was wondering if I could update Interprocess+Intrusive of the release branch with the current trunk code. If so, this merge is something I'm allowed to do with SVN (I read something about a python script some weeks ago) or the release manager is the only person who should do this? Regards, Ion
