Performance of various mutex implementations on Linux

Dear All, I have been benchmarking different mutex implementations on Linux. The variations that I have considered are the following: NO_LOCKING: - no mutex at all, as a baseline for comparison. SPINLOCK - uses an atomic operation and a tight loop. YIELD - uses an atomic operation like SPINLOCK, and calls sched_yield() if the lock is held by another thread. PTHREADS - uses the pthread_mutex_*() functions; this is what the current Boost mutexes do (as I understand it). The pthread_mutex functions are implemented using the futex() system call. FUTEX - this is my own implementation of the same algorithm that PTHREADS uses internally, based on the futex() system call, but it uses inlining to avoid a function call in the un-contended case. Apart from the PTHREADS method, these should all be considered unproven code; if anyone would like to review them for any subtle concurrency issues or other problems you are very welcome to do so. For background details of futexes, I suggest Ullrich Drepper's paper "Futexes Are Tricky". All of these results were obtained with g++ 4.1.2 with -O3. Data Structure Sizes -------------------- The size of the mutex object, in bytes, is as follows: NO_LOCKING: 0 SPINLOCK: 4 [*] YIELD: 4 [*] FUTEX: 4 [*] PTHREADS: 24 [*] in all of these cases I believe that a single byte, or perhaps even a single bit in the case of SPINLOCK and YIELD, would be sufficient; there may be some obscure alignment issue though. I believe that the large size of the pthreads mutex object is because it supports a number of variants such as recursive and checking mutexes, and timeouts, etc. all in the same structure. My other implementations are all very basic with none of these features. Execution Time, Non-Contended Case ---------------------------------- In many uses mutexes are rarely contended, so optimising the speed of the uncontended locking and unlocking operations is a common objective. I have measured this overhead on three machines: egypt: 1GHz VIA C3 x86 uniprocessor linux-2.6.19 ghana: 266MHz Intel XScale ARM uniprocessor linux-2.6.19 atum: 3.6GHz Intel Pentium 4 x86 2 processor linux-2.6.17 The times in nanoseconds for one lock and one unlock are: egypt ghana atum NO_LOCKING 0 0 0 SPINLOCK 17 30 5.7 YIELD 13 38 6.4 FUTEX 50 95 26 PTHREADS 115 986 39 Execution Time, Contended Case ------------------------------ See my detailed results, linked below, for numbers (the runtimes given are for 10^8 operations). The execution time in the contended case includes both the execution time of the lock and unlock functions and the time spent waiting for the lock to become available; it's not straightforward to distinguish these and I haven't tried to. The broad pattern is that SPINLOCK, naturally, is very slow, and the other methods are relatively fast. In my benchmark, YIELD does better than FUTEX, but this may well be a feature of the structure of my benchmark; I would expect FUTEX to do better with large numbers of threads. PTHREADS gets worse more quickly than other other methods as the number of mutexes and threads increases, perhaps because the larger size of its structures is less cache-friendly. Code Size --------- The code size overhead in bytes for each method is as follows. (Note that this is with -O3, not -Os. My impression with -Os is that it does even less inlining that I expected, e.g. even a static function that's only called once is not inlined. I may investigate this further.) x86 ARM NO_LOCKING 0 0 SPINLOCK 42 32 YIELD 31 56 FUTEX 66 96 PTHREADS 25 28 Observations ------------ I suggest that we seriously consider using an inline futex implementation of mutexes as the default choice on Linux, rather than calling the pthread_mutex functions. This is about twice as fast (on x86) and saves a lot of data size. On the other hand, it increases code size. The code size and speed can be improved further by using a simpler method that just calls sched_yield(). However, this method is less suitable for use as a default implementation because it will have worse complexity in applications with contention: futex() knows which thread to wake up next, while sched_yield() doesn't. ARM Observations ---------------- Most ARM processors have only one atomic instruction, swap. My implementations of SPINLOCK, YIELD and FUTEX make use of this. PTHREADS has abysmal performance on ARM; I suspect, but have not yet checked, that it somehow emulates the atomic instructions that it doesn't have by calling into the kernel. [ptr_container] How to shift part of a ptr_vector ?

Dear Experts, I have some code which currently uses a std::vector of pointers, and I'm investigating whether I can make it more concise, exception-safe, or otherwise better using a ptr_vector. But I can't see a good way to replace the following code, which shifts part of the vector by one place, deleting one pointee and creating a new one at the other end: struct LargeThing { .... }; std::vector<LargeThing*> v; void shift(int start, int end) { delete v[start]; for (int i=start; i<end; ++i) { // or use a std::algorithm v[i]=v[i+1]; } v[end] = new LargeThing; } With a ptr_vector, I think that I could do something like struct LargeThing { .... }; boost::ptr_vector<LargeThing> v; void shift(int start, int end) { v.release(v.begin()+start); // or should that be erase() ? v.insert(v.begin()+end-1, new LargeThing); } But this has complexity O(v.length()), because v.release() has to move all elements beyond start, while my current code has complexity O(end-start), because it doesn't touch the elements beyond end. Is there some better way to accomplish this? Maybe transfer() can be used? Or something involving swap()? Thanks for any suggestions. Phil.

testing of serialization lib

Dear experts, I want to add bullet proof testing for the implementation of boost::serialization lib in my database. So, I want to add at least a test in my regression which should fail whenever there is an incorrect change in serialization, i.e. if someone adds a new data member to a class but forget to serialize properly, that test should fail. So, please post your suggestions on how I should write that test. If you have any other idea about testing, please feel free to share. Thanks in advance, Arunava.

Hi Robert, Let me be more precise on a particular behavior. This looks to me very strange. Suppose, I have a database. I serialized it to a file 1.txt in text mode, deleted the current database, read back the file (1.txt) and serialized again to another file 2.txt. Again, deleted the database, read back 2.txt and serialized to yet another file 3.txt. Repeating the same cycle I created another file 4.txt from the imported database of 3.txt. Now if I compare these files, I see some interesting thing. 1.txt and 3.txt is identical. Similarly 2.txt and 4.txt is identical. But 1.txt and 2.txt is NOT !!!! Do you have any idea in which situation this can take place? If you need any other information please get back to me. FYI, my database don't contain any huge float or double values. There are mostly unsigned integers, but a number of stl containers have been used throughout. All the serialization tests do the following: create a structure, serialize to a file, load the file to a new structure and check for equality. I would expect that in your test text1.doc would be identical to text2.doc. UNLESS you have have floats/double in your classes. In general, it cannot be guarenteed that there is a one-to-one correspondence between floatiing point values as represented by binary in ram to text numbers represented as decimal based text. So in this case I would expect text1.doc to not be identical to text2.doc. There may be other cases, but that's all that occurs to me right now. [Review Request: Floating Point Utilities]

Hi again I just wanted to inform you that, using the newest library version 1.36, the serialization of all my objects worked perfectly fine :) . The only problem I encountered was a template error in <boost/serialization/utility.hpp> (included by <boost/serialization/map.hpp>). I didn't get any replies to this (not that I expect anyone to be interested in my crufty old compiler anyway J ). While rooting around in the boost 1.34.1 source I found detail/template_streams.hpp which seems to be the solution I am looking for but this doesn't appear to be used very much in other parts of boost. How should I proceed here? I can update the pieces of boost I need to use these macros - can I commit these changes (post 1.35)? - should I ask someone else to? Am I on my own? Hi, My DSP compiler comes with an ancient version of STL which only has old-style streams support (non templated streambuf etc.). It seems that in order to use some parts of boost that use streams, I would need to either modify boost to allow old style streams or use something like STLPort to get a more modern version of STL (My compiler vendor is unlikely to provide me with a more modern version). Using STLPort comes with its own porting issues - I have tried it briefly and it could probably be made to work but it would definitely require some modification. Is there any interest in supporting old-style streams in boost? Andrew

[ptr_container] [serialization] Header dependency between ptr_vector and serialization

Dear All, It seems that the ptr_vector headers include some serialization headers. I've discovered this because on my Debian system I have installed their libboost-dev package, which includes the header-only libraries such as ptr_container, but not libboost-serialization-dev. Alexey Khudyakov has already filed a Debian bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=457654 So, what should be going on here? My guess is that a subset of the serialization headers should be included in Debian's header-only libboost-dev package, so that ptr_vector can compile. I'm not sure if they get any hints for their partitioning from the Boost build system; if they do, then it should be fixed there. Any thoughts? Phil.
