The 2nd annual Boost Conference has been scheduled for May 4-9 2008. Please save the date! Registration should open sometime in the next week. If you want to stay at the Aspen Meadows (highly recommended as it is within walking distance of the conference venue and was the site of great after-hours discussions in '07), it's especially important this year that you book your rooms early. Since, unlike last year, Aspen's airport will be open this May, demand for rooms has been heavy. In fact, the following week, which we tried to get, was snapped up by another group before we even had a chance to catch our breath, just weeks after BoostCon'07 ended. We'll be working hard on getting the program together for 2008 over the coming weeks. We hope to include many more Boost authors and contributors, and build in several more intensive library-specific sessions, to make 2008 better than ever. If large lambdas are causing problems then one solution is to see if this is only occurring sufficiently far into that regime then it might make sense to just generate a normal instead. Scaling and shifting by 750 is not likely to cause much rounding errors for a standard normal deviate, but many direct algorithms for that extreme a value are likely to run into numerical problems. [Parameter] Regression test failures

The change applied to Trunk for Ticket #1535 has caused a bunch of regression test failures in the Parameter library, due to some missing preprocessor includes. I have opened Ticket #1541 for this, and attached a patch which allows the tests to pass on MSVC 7.1/8.0/9.0. Thanks, Richard Webb

[random] poisson_distribution problem and fix

The poisson_distribution code will fail for any mean larger than 750 or so (on my x86_64 machine). The problem is a comparison with exp(-_mean) which evaluates as zero right around there. The easiest fix is to operate with logs instead of exponents. I changed the operator() code to be something like this: RealType product = RealType(0); for(result_type m = 0; ; ++m) { product += log(eng()); if(product <= -_mean) return m; } This also makes it possible to get rid of the init() function and the _exp_mean private member variable. A far better fix would be to use an algorithm other than Knuth's for this. Knuth's algorithm is simple, but O(n). Here is some code I wrote, converting some old Fortran code that a friend had got from Numerical Recipes once upon a time.
