[system] WinCE patch for FormatMessageA

Windows CE does not supply the ANSI version of FormatMessage (only FormatMessageW). The attached patch substitutes FormatMessageW-based code in this case. [sun] [program_options] unicode tests

I see failure like this: http://tinyurl.com/3xqtvg that reads: "../libs/program_options/test/unicode_test.cpp", line 114: Warning (Anachronism): Undefined character escape sequence "\u". .... Assertion failed: option.value.front() == value, file ../libs/program_options/test/unicode_test.cpp, line 100 It seems like sun compiler does not support unicode escape characters? Any magic way to make it work? - Volodya

We can arrange the > links to show up elsewhere as needed. In particular they can show up > as a link to /doc/libs/<version>/doc/whatever.pdf. OK, but what I'd really like is a *stable* link in the docs to the PDF's, i.e. one that doesn't have to change for each release, is it possible to auto-generate an index of PDF's in the website area (by version and/or by library) that we can all link to? Also having <version> in the directory name is somewhat overkill given that we have an SVN history anyway... although I guess since SVN copies are cheap, we could have: web-root/doc/prebuilt/latest/libs/<library>/doc/whatever.pdf which would contain the most recent PDF build, and web-root/doc/prebuilt/<version>/libs/<library>/doc/whatever.pdf as an SVN copy of a specific version? Given that PDF's will most likely only be uploaded once per release (twice if you mess up first time :-) ), this doesn't greatly bloat SVN? Thoughts? John.

Jamfile for build of thread libs changed.
by Roland Schwarz 02 Nov '07

02 Nov '07

The build script for the thread library had some short-comings: *) Incorrect handling when <threading>single was specified on the command line. *) Annoying unrelated messages even when build boost libs, that had nothing to do with the thread lib. *) Name clashes when trying to build the thread lib for win32 and pthread at the same time. I addressed these issues with a new Jamfile, without changing the default behavior known from version 1.34: 1) Even when requesting <threading>single on the command line (or in Jamroot) the requirements of <threading>multi will now be honored correctly. (This is boost policy.) 2) It is possible to request a build of the threading lib for a specific api. The feature <threadapi> with allowed values "win32" and "pthread" is used for this. On the cmdline e.g. this is bjam --with-thread threadapi=pthread . (I removed the hyphen from the name on Volodyas recommendation.) 3) There is the concept of "native" api. On windows (more exactly the result of os.name is NT) this is win32, else pthread. The resulting library has the usual name "boost_thread" for the native api. The non native api is tagged with the api. E.g. the request bjam --with-thread install threadapi=win32,pthread will result in libraries booot_thread* and boost_thread_pthread*. (No more duplicate name errors.) 4) The information messages telling, that pthread is not available will only be emitted when really trying to build with pthread. I hope this will be less annoying to users that are not interested in pthread api. 5) The paths to the installed pthread lib now can be set in one of three places: environment, user-config.jam and site-config.jam. Thank you for attention, Roland aka speedsnail

[thread] WinCE patches for new thread lib code
by David Deakins 02 Nov '07

02 Nov '07

Attached are some Windows CE patches for the thread rewrite code: - boost\thread\win32\thread_primitives.hpp: Windows CE does not supply the ANSI version of most Win32 functions (only the wide-char versions). In addition, on WinCE certain functions like GetCurrentThread, GetCurrentProcess, SetEvent, ResetEvent, and a couple others are inline functions declared in the kfuncs.h header file (rather than functions imported from the Win32 DLLs). The patch implements workarounds for these issues. - boost\thread\win32\thread_heap_alloc.hpp: In DEBUG debugs, Windows CE headers define a macro for HeapAlloc to remap it to a HeapAllocTrace function. This wreaks havoc on the code to pull HeapAlloc into Boost.Thread's win32 namespace. At this point, the best solution I could see was to undef this HeapAlloc macro if present. - libs\thread\src\win32\thread.cpp: Windows CE does not have a process.h header. It also does not support the __declspec(thread) construct. Finally, _beginthreadex is not part of the WinCE CRT so an emulation of this function using ::CreateThread is included in the patch. - libs\thread\src\win32\tss.cpp: - libs\thread\src\win32\tss_hooks.cpp: Windows CE does not define the TLS_OUT_OF_INDEXES constant. The patch defines this constant to the right value for WinCE builds. - libs\thread\src\tss_null.cpp: - libs\thread\src\win32\tss_pe.cpp: The Windows CE linker and loader do not seem to support all the fancy magic involved in registering the TSS callback handler with the static-link version of the library (DLL version works fine). The patch reflects that automatic tss cleanup is not available in WinCE version of the static-link library. [1.35.0] Developer preparation
by Beman Dawes 02 Nov '07

02 Nov '07

Until further notice, the plan is to do quarterly Boost releases, and stick to that schedule even if updates for particular libraries aren't ready. If a library on the trunk isn't ready for a release, the prior release will be used for that library. I hoping for a final cut-off date of Friday, October 19, for making "go/no-go" decisions on which library updates make it into 1.35.0. That means libraries with updates to be included should be passing regression tests on trunk well before then. The process of merging into the release branch will start sooner for libraries already ready. Here is what developers should be doing over the next two weeks: * Start watching the regression tests at http://beta.boost.org/development/tests/trunk/developer/summary.html * For release criteria compilers, fix or markup all failures caused by your library's code. Fix or markup failures caused by your library's code for other compilers according to your own judgment. * For release criteria compilers show failures you think are caused by some other library's code, or by test configuration problems, post list notifications directed at the library or tool causing the problem. For other compilers, do the same if you wish. * For testing on the trunk to be a reliable indicator of release stability, prerequisite libraries on the trunk must be ready for release. If the trunk for your library isn't going to be ready in time for this release, please make a branch of the trunk with your library's name, and "merge" the trunk for your library so it is identical to 1.34.1. Note that if other libraries depend on your library, and you library is causing those libraries to break, you need to fix the trunk or return it to 1.34.1 within the next few days so that you don't impede the other libraries. Now the fun begins, --Beman

default template params
by John Torjo 01 Nov '07

01 Nov '07

Hi all, I know the Boost.Parameter allows advanced defaults when dealing with templated parameters - for templated classes. But shouldn't we have a simple interface, like this: struct default_ {}; template<class param, class default_type> struct use_default { typedef param type; }; template<class default_type> struct use_default<default_, default_type> { typedef default_type type; }; Example: template<class formatter_base = default_, class destination_base = default_, class f_ptr = default_, class d_ptr = default_ > struct logger { typedef use_default<formatter_base, formatter::base<> > ::type formatter_type; typedef use_default<destination_base, destination::base<> > ::type destination_type; typedef use_default<f_ptr, formatter_type* > f_ptr_type; typedef use_default<d_ptr, destination_type* > d_ptr_type; ... }; This way, if can specify only the params I want, specifying "default_" for the rest: logger< some_formatter> l; logger< default_, some_destination> l2; logger< some_fmt, default_, shared_ptr<some_fmt> > l3; ... IMHO shared_ptr overhead is very much overrated. 2. If you use it in a noncopyable fashion, then there is no run-time overhead. If you meant memory overhead, then I do not think it is something to worry about. 3. Untimately, you could try struct Foo : public pimpl<Foo>::value_semantics, boost::noncopyable. Thanks, Vladimir.

[boostbook] adding 'nonet' option to xsltproc

Hi Everyone, I've been trying my best, but I can't seem to find a way of telling xsltproc to not get the stylesheets from the internet (http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/) by passing it the 'nonet' option. Is there a way to do this easily, or is there a different reason why I can't generate documentation using boostbook?
