Hallo, I haven't found any information on the Wiki, whether there is an post commit hook that automatically adds a comment to referred tickets. I successfully use http://trac.edgewall.org/browser/branches/0.10-stable/contrib/trac-post-com… in other projects. This hook can even automatically close issues when I use phrases like 'fixes #1234' in the commit message. I suggest to add such a feature because it makes trac even more useful. (FYI: There is even a pre-commit hook available that denies commits that are not referring an open ticket.) mfg Gunter

But my multi_index would not compile on gcc 4.1.2 with the MapEntry having two templates and results in error: "error: macro "BOOST_MULTI_INDEX_MEMBER" passed 4 arguments, but takes just 3" so gcc thinks it's parsing out 4 args and not three. I then thought it was the typical macro problem with parsing so I put parens around the MapEntry first arguments to BOOST_MULTI_INDEX_MEMBER(): BOOST_MULTI_INDEX_MEMBER((MapEntry<KEYT,T>), KEYT, key) >, This didn't help either, is it not allowed to exceed one template argument in an argument to BOOST_MULTI_INDEX_MEMBER() so for example MapEntry<T> is ok but MapEntry<KEYT,T> is not? Boost::Serialization (XML in specific) and VS2005 issues

I've found a few minor issues with the Boost::Serialization in VS2005. -C++ Exceptions are set to Yes (/EHsc) and the boost library isn't automatically detecting this. I had to manually declare _CPPUNWIND in the preprocessor. -I needed to add #pragma warning(disable:4267) to collections_save_imp.hpp to get rid of warnings due to unsigned int count = s.size(); (containers use size_t as their size, not an unsigned int. Could be trouble in 64-bit world with really large containers). -I had to #define _SCL_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS 1 , as otherwise I get warning C4996 from compat_traits_type::copy(newptr, oldptr, prev_size); in alt_sstream_impl.hpp -The tutorial says to use ar & |boost::serialization::base_object<bus_stop>(*this); to save the base class. This doesn't work when saving XML, as the |BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP macro blows up because : is not a valid file character. I ended up doing |bus_stop |&bsbase = dynamic_cast<bus_stop_corner&> (*this); ar & bsbase to save the base class. I'm not sure if BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP also has issues with a dereferenced pointer, as I didn't try but I suspect it may (BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(*this)) for example. -In MFC serialization it is common to do the following bus_stop bs; archive << &bs; bus_stop *pbs = NULL; archive >> pbs the MFC CArchive automatically allocates the memory when archiving back a pointer. Using boost, I was getting no warnings, no errors, and it was a very difficult bug to track down because the only error I would get would be an exit code 3 from one of my threads. The tutorial should document this, and ideally boost::serialization should either give a warning or an error if the user tries to do this. Iterator_range test is failing on practically all platforms. If I understand correctly, it was decided not to treat null-terminated strings differently. If that's the case, why wasn't the test updated? Also, is it true that boost 1.34.1 still supports this behavior? The document says otherwise. I could be confused. Regards, Sean

Shared pointer atomic assembler for ARM?

Dear All, I note that shared_ptr uses architecture-specific assembler for the atomic operations needed for thread safe operations, on x86, ia64 and ppc; it falls back to pthreads for other architectures. Has anyone quantified the performance benefit of the assembler? Assuming that the benefit is significant, I'd like to implement it for ARM. Has anyone else looked at this? ARM has a swap instruction. I have a (very vague) recollection that perhaps some of the newer chips have some other locked instructions e.g. test-and-set, but I would want to code to the lowest common denominator i.e. swap only. Is this sufficient for what shared_ptr wants? I note that since 4.1, gcc has provided built-in functions for atomic operations. But it says that "Not all operations are supported by all target processors", and the list doesn't include swap; so maybe this isn't so useful after all. Another thought is that gcc now ships with a tr1/shared_ptr which is based on shared_ptr from boost 1.32; maybe it uses the gcc built-in atomics... checks... no, it calls something called __exchange_and_add, the implementation of which in libstdc++ (disassembled) doesn't look atomic to me! Anyway: Is this worthwhile? Has it already been done? Is swap sufficient? Regards, Phil.
