Boost building with CMake

Hi, I noticed the "boost development process / scope" thread on your list. A CMake user posted a link to your discussion. There is significant interest in the CMake community to help boost transition to CMake. Several people on the CMake list have volunteered to help, and Kitware is willing to put about 2 man weeks of effort into the conversion. I think that CMake has all the features to do what you need at this point, but if any bugs or issues are discovered during the process, we can fix them and/or provide work-arounds for the issues. I realize you have not yet decided on moving to CMake, but I thought I would put out this offer so that you could consider "free" support as one of the benefits you will receive from the port to CMake. I can see this happening in two ways. One would be for a CMake developer to create initial cmake files for boost, and get the basics working. Then, the work would be turned over to the Boost community. The other way would be to have a boost developer create the build files with help and support from the CMake community. Either way works for me. Of course, no one will want to do anything unless there is a commitment to actually use CMake. I will stay on this list while you decide, and answer any questions about CMake that may come up. Thanks, and I look forward to working with the boost community in the future. -Bill

Possible bug with mpl::joint_view working on two mpl::maps

Hi all, I have two mpl maps like this: typedef map<pair<int_<1>, int_<42> >, pair<int_<2>, int_<43> >, pair<int_<3>, int_<44> > > Map1; typedef map<pair<int_<4>, int_<44> >, pair<int_<5>, int_<45> >, pair<int_<6>, int_<46> > > Map2; I try to join them using "joint_view" as follows: typedef joint_view<Map1, Map2>::type JointMap; which works fine. Then I do std::cout << at<JointMap, int_<2> >::type::value << "\n"; which gives the following compiler error: error: 'value' is not a member of 'boost::mpl::pair<mpl_::int_<3>, mpl_::int_<44> >' I tried this with gcc 3.4.6 and 4.2 under Linux, Boost version is 1.34.0. It seems "at" returns the entry after the searched entry, and not only the right half, but the complete pair. Has anybody got any hints on this? [Announcement] Boost joins the Software Freedom Conservancy

Effective August 10th, 2007, Boost became a member project of the Software Freedom Conservancy, http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org. This means that Boost is now part of a legal entity under US law, and tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the US tax regulations. Although this doesn't have much short-term effect, it lets us move forward with BoostCon 2008 planning with less administrative delay. Long-term, being part of a non-profit organization allows Boost to continue to grow and prosper, and to raise money if that becomes useful. After considering the option of starting our own foundation (a huge amount of work), the Boost moderators decided that joining the Software Freedom Conservancy was a better option. The SFC provides the same legal abilities of a foundation at NO cost to the Boost project. It also minimizes the amount of legal and administrative hassles for project members -- allowing us to stay focused on technical matters rather than tax law. In addition, we are free to leave the SFC and create our own foundation at a later time if we decide that the SFC is not serving us well. Boost is not alone -- some other well known open source projects have also joined the SFC (eg: Samba, Wine). For those interested in the details, see a copy of the legal agreement at svn.boost.org/svn/boost/trunk/more/BoostSponsorshipAgreement.pdf I signed for Boost, since I was the founder and am the owner of the boost.org domain name. [SVN] Mime types on check in

I'm having problems checking in a couple of file types: *.vcproj // text xml for VC projects *.sln // text xml for VC solutions These don't appear in my local SVN configuration. And the pre-commit script is complaining about them. Could this be fixed please? Robert Ramey

pool allocator question

I have a question about the memory pool allocation that boost implements. Suppose we do the following: std::vector<int, boost::pool_allocator<int> > v; for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) v.push_back(-1); And the std::vector<int> is implemented so that it starts out with reserved space of 1 and doubles space every time. So At the end of the above loop v will have size 10 and reserved size 16. Does the boost allocator mean that there will memory arrays lieing around of size 1,2,4,8 that can be reused ? Eg if you do this: std::vector<int, boost::pool_allocator<int> > v; for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) v.push_back(-1); std::vector<int, boost::pool_allocator<int> > v2; for (int i = 0; i < 8; ++i) v2.push_back(-1); There will be no system call needed to get more memory - v2 will just reuse the memory in the pool_allocator<int> ? Hello, I have found the following little snippet of code quite useful (it is modeled closely after enable_if, but it enables if the given type has been defined, kind of like enable_if + HAS_XXX but simpler and more general). The for loop in float_hash_impl in <boost/functional/detail/hash_float.hpp> generates a warning from gcc when instantiated with T = float. Changing the < to != quiets the warning. To date there have been no reviews of the time series library posted to the developer or user lists. Is this a bad time for a review, or is no one interested enough in this library to put in the time to submit one? If you feel the library isn't interesting or useful enough, please post a note to the list so I can see that opinion. If you are struggling for time to do the review, please post at least a short opinion, and if a few days extension will make a difference we can investigate that possibility.
