I saw that, and it looks great. uBlas has a matrix container that's similar too. The reason I posted this matrix container is because it's simpler and more general than gil or ublas. For example, a container of spreadsheet cells may not warrant a programmer learning (or a compiler parsing) these larger, more specialized libraries. This class belongs under the general category 'containers', which is probably the first place a person would look in this example, rather than looking under 'image processing' or 'linear algebra'. Hi all, At last I've managed to find some time to polish the Constrained Value library (former Constrained Types library) and want to share it to hear any opinions and suggestions. If all goes OK, I'll request a formal review when the library is completed. To remind what this library is about, an excerpt from the motivation section of documentation is attached at the bottom of this message. Best regards, Robert Kawulak FROM THE MOTIVATION SECTION OF DOCUMENTATION: The Boost Constrained Value library contains class templates useful for creating constrained objects. The simplest example of a constrained object is hour. The only valid values for an hour within a day are integers from the range [0, 23]. There's no C++ type which exactly matches this set of valid values, so a larger integral type (e.g. int) must be used to represent hours. But this can lead to errors -- for instance, one may accidentally assign an invalid value, say 26, to a variable holding an hour. The Boost Constrained Value library provides a mechanism protecting against such mistakes: bounded_int<int, 0, 23>::type hour; hour = 20; // OK hour = 26; // error -- throws an exception Another feature of the library is the ability to specify what happens in case of assignment of an invalid value. For instance, an exception may be thrown as in the example above, or the value may be adjusted to meet the constraint criterions: wrapping_int<int, 0, 255>::type buffer_index; buffer_index = 257; // OK -- adjusts the value to fit in the range by wrapping it assert(buffer_index == 1); The library doesn't focus only on constrained objects that hold a value belonging to a specified range (i.e., bounded objects). Virtually any constraint can be imposed using appropriate predicate: // constraint policy -- a predicate struct is_even { bool operator () (int i) const { return (i % 2) == 0; } }; // and the usage is as simple as: constrained<int, is_even>::type even_int; even_int = 2; // OK even_int++; // error -- throws an exception

Hi Eric, I recently tried to make recursive/nested regular expressions available for the dynamic regex. It would be cool if you could have look at that. http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/branches/xpressive/nested_dynamic_regex/ To achieve that I extended the compiler traits, which now includes a lookup for references to other regular expressions. I saw that static regular expressions used by reference, store a weak pointer to regex the regex impl object. For dynamic regular expressions I had to store a pointer to the regular expression, and make the class that groups all expressions noncopyable. Do you see a nicer solution? Regards Andreas Pokorny

[IOStreams] Opinion on test case needed

Hi! I had problems using iostreams::stream<file_descriptor> with Windows and MSVC 8 Express. The file_descriptor had a bug and failed seeking. But the error had gone unnoticed. Because of this I wrote a test case for this in hope to discover an error in IOStreams (source: see below). I did not discover one. Instead the test runs fine on linux/gcc 4.1.2 but fails on Windows/MSVC8Express (test run: see below). I based the test on "Standard C++ IOStreams and Locales" (Langer&Kreft), Section 1.3 "The Stream State". And I found the IOStreams library is just using std::iostream for handling the errors. So is MSVC buggy in this regard? Or am I missing something? asio, drop in for 1.34.1 ?

Since asio did not made it into 1.34 and 1.35 not likely to have quarterly schedules until a release-ready branch is established: Is there a drop in or backported (to 1.34) asio available somewhere? I tried the one from trunk, but this doesn't work because of dependency on system lib, which is not yet available in 1.34. Roland aka speedsnail
