In following up the attached message the cause appears to be a Boost.Build issue because specifying: bjam --toolset=gcc-nocygwin has no effect on the gcc command line, the generated command lines are simply: "g++" -ftemplate-depth-128 -O0 -fno-inline -Wall -g -mthreads -DBOOST_ALL_NO_LIB=1 -DBOOST_REGEX_DYN_LINK=1 -I"." -c -o "bin.v2\libs\regex\build\gcc-nocygwin\debug\threading-multi\cpp_regex_traits.o" "libs\regex\src\..\src\cpp_regex_traits.cpp" So there's no -mno-cygwin flag and the binaries are actually built for cygwin not mingw. At the same time there is no documented means of building with Mingw in the getting started guide: should there be? Cheers, John.

[math_toolkit] ADL question

Hello, I haven't looked much at the math toolkit yet but I was interested in how it handled errors so I peeked at common_error_handling.hpp I see it explicitly qualifies each all to isfinite with (boost::math::isfinite)( value ). I assume this is to prevent macro expansion however this means that if a UDT is passed in the user is required to add their isfinite to the boost::math namespace instead of having it be reachable through ADL. Is this intentional? I think the following would work if it's not. using boost::math::isfinite; isfinite BOOST_PREVENT_MACRO_SUBSTITUTION( value ); I'm not sure if UDT support for this library has been considered in its design but I'm working to provide a fixed-point math library that I hope can be used as a real type just like float and double. I would like to be able to keep as much as possible in the library's namespace. Thanks, Michael Marcin

Acceptable Licenses for Boost-Doc SVG Icons

All, (I have cross-posted this to the Dev list as recently there had been some discussion over licensing and to ensure that this gets the appropriate visibility by interested people. If you respond to this post could you please move it to the boost-docs list.) To assist with the revamp of the look and feel for the Boost Documentation project (http://tinyurl.com/2uxfut) that Matias is currently spearheading I am trying to find SVG icons that are licensed under a Creative Commons style license (the icons I am currently recommending are specifically licensed under the "Create Commons Attribution Share-Alike license" http://tinyurl.com/aj2s6) >From reading through the archives and the recent thread about the current status of licensed code within Boost and reading the link off the boost home page for the Boost Software License (http://tinyurl.com/2xood5) It appears that the preference is for all code and documentation to be licensed under the BSL. Rather than risk proposing icons that are not licensed appropriately and then find that the license type was not acceptable I thought I would solicit feedback first. I have two questions for you to answer: The first question is: Would image files be "required to" or "the preference is" use the BSL. The second question is: If it was decided that it is only a preference. Would the above linked license (Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license) be acceptable to the boost community? No. The only thing buffered will be blocks of basic units. * Interface (I/O streams-like needed?) Yes, if only because adding the backward compatibility should be easy given the design/impl goes well. Some general points; 1. Confusion around char, byte, text, binary, encoding and codepoint For me this has been a bit frustrating (its been untidy for a long time) and also illuminating (Unicode). For me there are bytes (or basic units) and items of application data. Everything in between is encoding. 2. Inclusion of "endianness" and "representation" in the binary layers. IIUC you are allowing applications to declare that they will only talk to (e.g. ) Motorola-based machines. I suppose this can be justified but from an engineering point of view the strategy implicit in ntohl is more appealing. The subtle drawback of allowing the declaration of endianness and the fact that underlying operations (e.g. network nagling) shaft it anyhow makes it a "no go" for me. 3. Lack of extensibility While your design doesnt actually preclude this, it also isnt explicit about it being possible, i.e. how would you redo your diagram for an application that is using different encodings over different network connections and to data files. [xpressive] wide character blank not matching properly

It seems that xpressive's blank isn't matched properly to a space when used with wide strings. Using space instead, or using (set= STR(' '),STR('\t')) seems to work in both cases. I'm using MSVC 2005 SP1. I'm not sure if the problem is in the compiler's char traits and how blank uses them (if it does) or somewhere in the bowels of xpressive. Thanks, JF

[serialization] dynamically_initialized

Hi Robert, What is the reason for having both dynamically_initialized::instance and dynamically_initialized::get_instance ? The reason I am asking is because my program is crashing and I tracked it down to dynamically_initialized::instance being used to before it is initialized with dynamically_initialized::get_instance. It a compiler bug, but it seems to me it can be worked around by removing dynamically_initialized::instance . I am compiling with msvc8.sp1 Regards, Nikolay Mladenov
