Why is operator. not overridable?

Hi, I was wondering, why is overloading operator. (period) forbidden? It would make a few odd applications possible (dynamic inheritance and transparent remote method invocation spring to my mind) and it would be fairly generic. The only sidecase I can see is that operator. itself would not be looked up through operator. . I read that there was previous debate on the subject, but I haven't been able to find why it was rejected. Thanks, Peter

Boost_Python build problems, 1_34_0_beta, Windows

I'm trying to figure out why boost_python-vc-gy-1_34.dll links with python25.lib, and not with python25_d.lib My build command is: bjam "-sVC71_ROOT=c:/dev/vc71" "-sTOOLS=vc-7_1" "-sPYTHON_VERSION=2.5" "-sPYTHON_ROOT=d: \720\tools\python" "-sBUILD=debug-python" The resulting debug-python\boost_python-vc-gy-1_34.dll depends on python25.dll, and not python25_d.dll. The '-n' indicates the problem: bjam -n -sVC71_ROOT=c:/dev/vc71 -sTOOLS=vc-7_1 -sPYTHON_VERSION=2.5 -sPYTHON_ROOT=d:\tools\python -sBUILD=debug-python In the output I see lines: "..\..\..\bin.v2\libs\python\build\msvc\debug-python\exec.obj" "python25.lib" it should be python25_d.lib I've been futilely staring at python.jam which appears to try to do the correct thing, but doesn't quite do it for me. Another problem I have that it picks the wrong TOOLS, even if I specify them like above, bjam complaining: warning: No toolsets are configured. warning: Configuring default toolset "msvc". But seems to work anyway, as vc71 comes first on my path... I don't think this is related to the python25.lib vs python25_d.lib problem above though. [mpl] arithmetic feature request

It would be nice if we could represent all compile-time algebraic operations in Boost.Units using MPL arithmetic. At present, MPL supports negate, adds, subtracts, times, divides. Boost.Units additionally would require : 1) unary_plus - the compile-time equivalent of operator+(T) 2) unary_minus - the compile-time equivalent of operator-(T); this is identical to current mpl::negate, but it would be nice to have it for notational consistency with unary_plus 3) power<T,U> (or pow<T,U>) - the compile-time equivalent of pow(T,U) 4) root<T,U> - the compile-time equivalent of pow(T,1/U); can be implemented with power<T,U>, but this is a nicer syntax to eliminate its remaining compile-time algebra operators. Any thoughts on whether this would be a worthwhile addition to MPL? Matthias

Hi Everyone, I've recently tried the following (inlined test) which isolates the problem I've encountered with boost::lexical_cast<int8_t>: #include <iostream> #include <boost/lexical_cast.hpp> int main(int argc, char * argv[]) { int8_t value; try { value = boost::lexical_cast<int8_t>("127"); } catch (std::exception & e) { std::cerr << e.what() << '\n'; } return 0; }; This is compiled with gcc 4.1.2 on Linux. Any idea why 127 wouldn't fit into an 8-bit signed integer? The defined range for signed 8 bit integers should be -127..+127 right? Am I missing something?
