Category: Python Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Kim Barrett (kbarrett) Assigned to: David Abrahams (david_abrahams) Summary: gcc strict-aliasing problems with python Initial Comment: With the Boost 1.34.0 beta release candidate, and also with Boost 1.33.1, and probably before that too, building Boost.Python in release mode with a recent version of gcc (4.x) generates several occurrences of warnings: "dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict aliasing rules" Beginning with Python 2.3 and at least through Python 2.5, when building Python with gcc, the gcc option -fno-strict-aliasing is used. So clearly the Python developers don't consider Python to be strict-aliasing correct (or else don't trust gcc's strict-aliasing analysis). The result of not being strict-aliasing correct when gcc's strict aliasing option is enabled (which I think is the default for gcc 4.0 onward, at least at high optimization levels) is that the compiler may generate non-working code. I don't have any specific evidence that the warnings from compiling Boost.Python indicate actual problems. These warnings may appear without there being any actual code generation differences. Unfortunately, that may vary from one version of gcc to another. Even worse, gcc may fail to generate warnings in cases where it does indeed generate non-working code. The best method I know of for finding instances of code broken by strict-aliasing based optimizations is to compile with and without that option, compare the generated code, and carefully examine the places that are different, with some differences being seemingly harmless. In other words, a very difficult and error-prone process. [gil] added hsl color space to gil

Hi guys, I have added the HSL color space as an extension to gil. The code is structured similar to other color spaces, like rgb. You can get the code at http://gil-contributions.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/gil_2/boost/gil/extension… To construct a hsl view from a rgb image use the gil way: color_converted_view<hsl32f_pixel_t>( rgb_view, hsl_view ); The other way around would be: color_converted_view<rgb8_pixel_t>( hsl_view, rgb_view ); So far, there is only hsl32f_xxx_t possible. But I think that's OK for a start. Please let me know what you think. Next will be the HSV color space. Christian

Not wanting to detract from the 'move to subversion' discussion (which I-for-one am glad is happening), I've been wondering about the what 'hard line release approach' entails. FWIW, to me this would imply a skeleton policy like so: a) Set a monthly/2 monthly/whatever deadline for a release. b) Straight after each release, a new branch is formed for the release testing c) If a developer thinks a library of theirs is 'ready' then they add it to the testing branch. Regression tests are done on these libraries d) As the deadline approaches and an RC branch is created, libraries that pass tests can be added. Tests are still only done on the testing branch (assume the RC branch code is the same as the testing branch code) e) At the deadline the release is done, following the normal rules: minor increment for updates, major increment for new libraries. Obviously that is a very raw suggestion and ignores the possible complexity of making regression test scripts work with this, about which I know nothing. Concerns it addresses are: 1) Library maintainers don't have to wait a long time to add fixes to their library - something which means the boost repository stays out of date with the developers' own since there's little point keeping two up to date. 2) New libraries could potentially be added at any point. 3) HEAD will be usually be comparable to RC 4) Release quality won't be compromised (in theory). They're just things I've been mulling over for a few days. Thoughts? Darren

[1.34.0]How to submit patch?

Hi, I have a couple of minor fixes for the typeof docs, but I am not sure how to submit them... Do I create the patch against the main branch or do I commit into the main branch and then create the patch against 1.34.0 branch? Or maybe something else? Thanks, Arkadiy

[gil] added hsl color space to gil

The HSL color space is a needed addition. I took a quick look and I'll try it out soon, but it looks good. It follows the lead of the adobe gil developers and uses mpl::vector3, which I think is a pretty clever use of mpl. I'll give some more feedback within a week or so.
