The C library creates threads, the C library cancels them; the question is, what happens when the C library cancels a thread it created, which happens to be running C++ code at the time? Even today, on non-windows platforms where pthread is standard, we have this problem. So this discussion is not about adopting pthreads. It's about adopting an extended pthread interface, which specifically deals with C/C++ interoperability. I understand that N2184 is meant to be a low level interface, on top of which one can build more powerful abstractions. From this perspective, N2178 is a higher level interface indeed. N2184 begins where pthread ends; N2178 needs an extended pthread interface to be able to express its higher level C++ abstraction. >From a certain point of view, the question is, which one of the two abstractions -- standard pthread, or extended pthread -- is more appropriate. smart_ptr: Helper to ease handling objects from a class heirarchy

Hi, I was thinking whether it would be meaningful to have a template<typename T, typename Clone_policy> class Owned_ptr { ... }; where: 1) The Owned_ptr takes care of object ownership like other smart pointers; deleting the object when the Owned_ptr is destructed. 2) The assignment operator doesn't transfer the ownership rights, but clones the object using the Clone_polcy. This allows using the copy constructor or a virtual clone function in the class heirarchy. 3) The copy constructor works just like assignment. The recent projects that I've worked own have benefitted from such an helper class. It eases creating deep copies of complex objects; avoids having to implement assignment operators/copy constructors for every class. Best regards, Anand.

Hi: I am a sophomore undergraduate student from China, following Software Engineering Major. I have submitted an application yet, it is about to implement The Web Crawler Library. I know there is famous C++ Web Crawler program called Larbin, and Larbin is very efficient, can fetch 5,000,000 pages a day on a standard PC. But, Larbin have several disadvantages. For example, Larbin can only run under LINUX or other BSD platform, it's not support WINDOWS. Furthermore, Larbin's expansibility is not very good, can not work in some project. The most important is Larbin has stopped developing since July the 9th, 2003. Hence, I want design a new Web Crawler Library. And my proposals are as follow: 1. Simple Simple is very important in libraries, nobody wants trouble. Therefore, keep easy to use, just like other Boost libraries. 2. Highly Configurable Users can control only crawler the appointed website, and appoint the depths, file formats, the number of processes, threads. And this library just sees to "Crawler", the work of "parser" and storage mode hands to users. 3. Support all operating platform. This is the most important thing for standard libraries. (Larbin can only run under Linux and BSD) 4. Multi-thread and multi-process For higher speed, multi-thread and multi-process is required. 5. According to the website updated analysis Just download what is new file or updated file, can save time and website traffic 6. Comply to the ROBOT.TXT rules If there is possible, I want to add Server/Client mode, allow a large number of programs runs together. Even if my project is rejected, I also want to implement this project. I will continue my "Summer of Code" journey :) It is very late in China, about 1:30 am, so I'd go to bed. Good Night Yang Lang

[algorithm] Two comments

Hi, I started using the filter/split-iterators from the string-algorithm. today, and liked them a lot. However, I think some improvements would make them even better: 1. Provide const overloads for make_foo_iterator funcs. Currently, I can't use those functions to search f.ex. a const std::string. Works fine when using the constructor directly though. 2. Make the filter_type public or templated (with boost::function as default). Simply because I'd like to avoid dynamic memory allocation when in functions creating those iterators. It feels a bit unnecessary and I can't create something of filter_iterator_base::finder_type, since it's protected. Does it sound reasonable? Cheers, /Marcus
