I have been using a set of Unicode classes that I wrote that follow the STL common conventions for a while. These include unicode::ustring to replace std::string, unicode::uifstream to replace std::uifstream, and unicode::uofstream to replace std::ofstream. Is there any interest in adding them to Boost? I was pretty shocked to find that boost doesn't already have something like this (or maybe it does and I just haven't found it). Each of the classes mimics the standard equivalents' design like member names and iterator sub-classes. They also bidirectionally support all of UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32/UCS-4, UCS-2, and traditional ASCII. The only thing that I think is lacking is regex - not sure how to go about that. Maybe collaborate with the current boost.regex author(s) to add non-PCRE Unicode support? Note: I am happy do the necessary work to make the library meet Boost's quality standards.

The optional library has a number of new failures now. I see a checkin to boost/optional/optional.hpp, made by Fernando Cacciola: revision 1.9.2.4 date: 02/03/07 02:08; author: fcacciola none_t/none reimplemented to avoid precompiled header issues (thanks to Joe Gottam) optional<T> now has direct relational operator optional<T>::operator-> fixed for reference types With the following on-list commentary: I just commited the fix to RC_1_34_0, just right on time before the code freeze tonight. I'm concerned about two things: 1. The "code freeze" mentioned above is "complete dead freeze", and it was agreed on this list that all commits, even before this dead freeze, would be posted to the list for approval. I wonder if this agreement was not clearly communicated? 2. Apparently, the change broke something, including mainstream compilers such as gcc-4.1. We're now in a dead freeze. Fernando, what do you think we can do at this point? - Volodya

A new alpha version of mcs::units has been posted to SourceForge since the vault is not accepting uploads: www.sourceforge.net/projects/mcs-units (mcs_units_v0.7.0_alpha_4.zip). This version includes some significant new functionality that Steven Watanabe and I have been working on: - heterogeneous and mixed unit systems allowing constructs such as watt hr, m^2/cm^(1/2), etc... in which fundamental units from different unit systems are combined and multiple fundamental units may have the same dimensional signature. - fine-grained implicit unit conversion has been enabled, allowing implicit conversions as long as they are allowed for every fundamental dimension present - conversions between homogeneous and heterogeneous unit systems - trigonometric functions and angle systems for degrees, gradians, and radians (with implicit conversions to SI and CGS radians) are included - a nearly complete set of CODATA physical constants Comments and bug reports (especially on the heterogeneous unit/implicit conversion functionality) are welcomed, as always. Documentation is not completely up to date, but virtually all functionality is demonstrated in the examples. Matthias

The following page is currently spammed: http://www.crystalclearsoftware.com/cgi-bin/boost_wiki/wiki.pl?GDTL/DateTim… When I try to despam it by pasting the text from the previous, valid revision, the following shows at saving time: Spam content found, page will not be saved. I guess the spam filter is fooled by the many (though valid) URLs in the original text. Is there any other way to despam a page? [SoC] Boost review and the SoC timetable

One of the problems I perceived with Boost SoC involvement last year is that very few of the projects have come up for review, with the notable exception of Bimap. Would it be possible to bump SoC projects up the review queue to get feedback while the student is still participating, towards the end of the SoC period? Perhaps have a special SoC review queue for 'mini-reviews' where the students can present to the wider Boost audience and hopefully be encouraged to continue the work for a more complete review. This is also a good time to get other people involved who may help bring that work through to final review - I am not sure about Google's policy on shared participation during the SoC period itself. -- AlisdairM
