Weird behaviour/bug in ptr_map

I was doing what I do regularly with std::maps... a m_plsts.erase( m_plsts.begin(), m_plsts.end() ); on a boost::ptr_map. It failed with an assertion error... Digging around, it came from ptr_container/detail/associative_ptr_container.hpp on line 117. It appears that every single erase (including that done by a key) has an assert for the list not being empty! Why is this the case? As far as I understand, it is valid to attempt to remove a key that does not exist. It follows that the same behaviour would occur whether the map was empty or not. Attempting to remove an element from an empty map should not result in an abort. If I'm unaware of some C++ convention I would love to be informed, however this definitely screams bug to me. In the paragraph "Limitations", where the forwarding problem is discussed, the following appears: "...An oft-proposed "solution" to this problem is to add an overload: template<class T> void f(T & t); template<class T> void f(T const & t); Unfortunately, this (a) requires providing 512 overloads for nine arguments and (b) does not actually work for const arguments, both l- and r-values, since the two templates produce the exact same signature and cannot be partially ordered." It's asserion (b) that puzzles me. Doesn't the standard say that the second overload of f is more specialized thus yielding a well-defined partial order? Recently there was some discussion about adding config support for C++0x features. The attached test would pass for compilers implementing Core Issue 106 - reference collapsing. There are a couple of associated issues: Is this our preferred naming convention? Does the config generating script need updating to support it? Which compilers already implement the feature? Can any existing libraries put the detected feature to use? For reference, here is the source for the test case extracted from the attached file: template < typename T > struct test_holder { typedef T & type; }; typedef test_holder< int & >::type wrap_test; This will be a compile time failure on platforms that do not support the feature, but it must be actively enabled on a per-compiler basis in the compiler config files. -- AlisdairM
