[Boost-bugs] [ boost-Bugs-1580489 ] xml serialization fails when using namespace

Bugs item #1580489, was opened at 2006-10-19 14:13 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=107586&aid=1580489&group_… Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: serialization Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Gerd v. Egidy (gvegidy) Assigned to: Robert Ramey (ramey) Summary: xml serialization fails when using namespace Initial Comment: When serializing an object whose class is in a namespace the xml serialization throws an "unrecognized XML syntax" exception. Serializing using text or binary archive works without problem. The attached example shows the problem: define BUG and it throws, undef it and it works. It seems like the same bug was reported to the user mailinglist in this thread: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/15479 but at that time noone guessed that the namespace is the problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=107586&aid=1580489&group_… ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? An alternative to having an io_service per active object is to have multiple active objects share a single io_service (would these be called "semi-active objects"?). If you also use a strand per active object, then the active objects can even share an io_service with a thread pool calling io_service::run(). The strand will ensure that the operations for a single active object don't execute concurrently. Cheers, Chris

Hi Michael, It looks like the rival for your library is not a switch statement or an if-else statement, but a hash_map. In your rationale, you should make clear what your library can do that the following construct cannot: template <typename T> struct dynamic_dispatcher { typedef hash_map< T, boost::function<void ()> > type; }; dynamic_dispatcher<int>::type dispatcher; dispatcher[0] = boost::bind(&myfun0); dispatcher[1] = boost::bind(&myfun1); int i; std::cin >> i; dispatcher[i]() From my reading, the only difference is that hash map's operator[] will not throw in the case where an element is not found. Active Objects Library
by Dean Michael Berris 19 Oct '06

19 Oct '06

Hi everyone, I'm working on a project right now which uses both Boost.Asio and Boost.Thread along with a lot of other Boost libraries. We've pretty much had to roll our own Active Object implementation everytime we need asynchronous method invocation, and I understand that Futures are being proposed for C++0x. The question would be whether there will be (or whether there already is) a "generic" active object implementation? We've found that Boost.Asio's io_service is a good scheduler/queue and using a futures wrapper for the result types. Perhaps something that used some preprocessor magic or with some TMP ? Insights and pointers will be most appreciated. -- Dean Michael C. Berris C++ Software Architect Orange and Bronze Software Labs, Ltd. We're interested in adding a new bjam toolset to build the latest Boost for one of our platforms. What would be the process for having this included in an official release? Thanks much, Colin Lee Cray Inc.

Review of Generic Image Library (GIL) begins today, Oct5, 2006
by Tom Brinkman 19 Oct '06

19 Oct '06

The review of Generic Image Library (GIL) begins today, October 5, 2006, and continues through October 15, 2006. Please download the library at: http://opensource.adobe.com/gil. Minor change are being made regularly (daily), so check the site often for updates. I highly recommend viewing the 55 minute Breeze presentation describing the library at: http://opensource.adobe.com/gil/presentation/index.htm A tutorial is available at: http://opensource.adobe.com/gil/gil_tutorial.pdf A design guide is availage at: http://opensource.adobe.com/gil/gil_design_guide.pdf Description: The Generic Image Library (GIL) is a C++ library that abstracts the image representation from operations on images. It allows for writing the image processing algorithm once and having it work for images in any color space, channel depth and pixel organization, or even synthetic images, without compromising the performance. GIL has an extension mechanism that allows for adding extra functionality. Two extensions are currently provided – one for image I/O and one for handling images whose properties are specified at run-time. Review questions: Please always explicitly state in your review, whether you think the library should be accepted into Boost. You might want to comment on the following questions: - What is your evaluation of the design? - What is your evaluation of the implementation? - What is your evaluation of the documentation? - What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? - Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? - How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? - Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Runtime Dynamic Dispatch (boost-dispatch)
by Dean Michael Berris 18 Oct '06

18 Oct '06

Hi Everyone, I'm about to make a shameless plug about the runtime dispatch library I've been working on the past few months (mostly testing and using in a project), which I've uploaded to the vault: http://tinyurl.com/ycsq6n for everyone to check out and comment on. I've hosted the project at sourceforge, and the release files (and subversion repo) can be downloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dispatcher The latest release already contains a strategized_map type (as suggested earlier) which will later more or less turn into a `dynamic object reference dispatcher' which acts more like the dispatcher. Comments and insights will be most appreciated. Have a great day everyone! -- Dean Michael C. Berris C++ Software Architect Orange and Bronze Software Labs, Ltd. Generic Image Library (GIL) accessing raw memory
by Timothy M. Shead 18 Oct '06

18 Oct '06

Another question / observation on the GIL API. When interfacing with external code, particularly "C" libraries, it's often necessary to pass a pointer to the memory managed by an image (gdk_pixbuf_create_from_raw_data() in my case). So far, I've been using &image[0] to get a pointer to memory, but that's pretty ugly, and I'm thinking it might not work for all cases. Is there a better way to do it? If not, I'd suggest adding an "image::data()" method that would provide canonical access to memory. The choice of name is for consistency with std::basic_string::data(). Cheers, Tim
