xml_iarchive blows out the stack

When restoring a string from an xml_iarchive, the process stack can grow surprisingly large. A demonstration is appended. Restoring a string with 10000 '<' characters blows out the stack to more than 3.7MB. Notice that the demo program shows that neither the letter 'x' nor the letter '.' is problematic. It seems that stack growth only comes from entity references in the xml archive, i.e., sequences that match the 'Reference' pattern in basic_xml_grammar.ipp): >, &, < ' ". My guess is that the parser used to unescape the references has the property that it pushes the stack every time it sees one of Reference patterns. This isn't just a theoretical problem. It can arise in practice if one tries to restore a string containing XML, or C++ source. (all those '<', '>' and '&'). In fact, I found it by investigating why my stack grew to more than 1MB when I switched from a text_archive to an xml archive in a real application. I haven't taken a close look at the grammar, and I have no experience at all with spirit. Is this likely to be something easily fixable, or is it something one just has to live with? [Property Map] Composition of properties

Hello everyone, I have been using properties quite extensively in my work. And these last days i have needed to combine properties numerous times. By that, i mean that i have n properties p1, p2, ... pn and what i use is get( p1, get( p2, get( ..., get( pn, object ) ... ) ) ) I would very much want to make a composite property p to be used like this : get( p, object ) (most of the time, n=2, but why stop there ? :-) ) I have to tried to find such functionality but in vain so far... Does it not exist ? Are there obstacles that i have not foreseen ? I am not able to reproduce this on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu g++ (GCC) 4.1.1 20060525 (Red Hat 4.1.1-1) i686-pc-linux-gnu g++ (GCC) 4.0.2 20051125 (Red Hat 4.0.2-8) I have no idea if this is becuase my environment is different from the one run at the automatic regresson tester or if this is compiler problem that has been fixed in dot-releases. -- Lgb

[inspect] Quickbook license check and Incorrect unlinked file errors.

Hello, I've made a couple of small changes to inspect. The first one causes it to scan '.qbk' files, which it hasn't been scanning up to now. Hopefully that's not too controversial - if it is I can revert it. If you're using quickbook you'll want to make sure that all your files have a copyright notice. And secondly, you can now add a 'boostinspect:nounlinked' exclusion tag to a source file to stop inspect complaining if a html file isn't linked to. I posted this before and there were no objections, although that might be because it was buried inside a thread so I'm mentioning it here for anyone who missed it. Also, if a file is only linked from files containing 'boost:nolink' it is currently reported as unlinked. This currently happend to 'tools/build/v1/variables.html' and 'doc/html/jam.html'. The attached patch fixes that. Should I be checking with someone before making changes like these? Inspect doesn't seem to have a maintainer. Daniel

Exception lib proposal update: exception_info name collision

Hello, I forgot to mention that windows.h defines a macro called exception_info which causes obscure compile errors with the proposed boost exception library (http://www.revergestudios.com/boost-exception/boost-exception.htm) My own solution to this issue was to #undef exception_info after including windows.h, but I realize that the easiest solution to this problem is to rename the exception_info function in the exception lib. I'm thinking of renaming it to xinfo but I'd like to consider other ideas as well. Thanks, Emil Dotchevski

[intrusive] Intrusive containers library strikes back

Hi to all, Olaf Krzikalla's Intrusive container library was once in the review queue, but sadly the he has no time to develop it further. The library is, IMHO, very useful for many applications and it's well designed. I was interested in continuing Olaf's work because intrusive containers would be very helpful for Boost.Interprocess users so I've contacted Olaf to ask permission to continue his library. He agrees and he has offered help so I'm planning to start some work on the library in a few weeks. Olaf has collected some user requests from the past and the library was developed a bit further than the last snapshot posted in his web-page (http://people.freenet.de/turtle++/intrusive.html) I don't know if someone else was developing the library and I wouldn't like to duplicate any effort. So if someone is actively working on the library, please reply this post so that we can collaborate . I'm currently planning to port the documentation to Quickbook and to post Olaf's last version to start requesting comments and new features. Once the current code is posted, I have some features that I would like add: -> Custom pointer types to be able to use intrusive containers in memory mapped regions. -> Adding a new iset class (currently there is only an intrusive multiset, but not a set). -> Adding configurable constant-time size() to containers (currently ilist/islist have linear time size()) -> Adding a pseudo-intrusive hash container. Min-Plus Algebra (Dioid) and Min-Plus Convolution

Hi, Is there any interest in a library for min-plus (dioid) algebra and min-plus convolution. In min-plus algebra sum is replaced by minimum operator, while product is replaced by sum operator. Thus, here, (3+4)*5 = min(3,4) + 5 = 3 + 5 = 8. Min-plus convolution is convolution of flow curves, for example, for flows in Computer Networks. It goes like this :- (f conv g)(t) = min(f(s) + g(t-s)). These convolutions will be important for deterministic characterization of networks. We have implemented peak rate, affine, ratelatency and piecewise linear curves and corresponding convolutions. These whole thing will be applicable to wide areas starting from piecewise approximation of curves to simulation of flow equations. Regards, Reetesh Mukul
