Hi, _M_X64 (MSVC typedef for AMD64/Intel EM64T) is missing from the list of little endian platforms in detail/endian.hpp. Could someone please apply the attached patch? TR2 and C++0x heads up

The C++ standards committee's Library Working Group has proposed a schedule for library changes and extensions: * October 2005: cutoff date for C++0x major library proposals * October 2006: cutoff date for library TR2 proposals * April 2007: cutoff date for C++0x library clean-up papers The usual rule-of-thumb is that new library components go in TR2, while changes to existing components go in C++0x. The LWG will consider exceptions to the rule on a case-by-case basis. The LWG is planning to issue a "Call for Proposals" with details, but in the meantime Boost developers might want to start thinking about which Boost libraries they want to propose to the LWG. Because most proposals go through one or more revisions before being accepted, it helps a proposal's chances if it reaches the committee as many meetings as possible before the final cut-off. So far there are plans to propose Boost.Threads, Boost.Filesystem, and Boost.Signals. As well as proposals for some of the more major libraries, I personally hope someone will do a sweep through Boost looking at some of the smaller utilities and helpers for a possible "Small Additions" proposal. --Beman

Farewell, Devin Smith

Sadly for us, Boost lost its lawyer today. Devin Smith has done wonderful work for us over the past few years, and I thank him both personally and on behalf of the Boost community. Quite unexpectedly even for Devin, he's found a new position as an in-house lawyer with a Pharmaceutical firm, and is moving on to greener pastures. I met Devin through contacts at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, when we were trying to establish a single standard Boost license. At a time when interest in Boost was growing faster than ever, our myriad licenses presented a barrier to adoption that could have been fatal to our mission. Without broad adoption, it's impossible to establish existing practice suitable for incorporation into the C++ standard. Devin seemed to "get" our needs in a way the other lawyers had not, and has been able to address them with quick intelligence, clarity, and straightforwardness. Those abilities are reflected in our license, which captures the intention of Boost while covering all the necessary legal bases. I don't think it's exaggerating to say that the result is a crucial platform on which our future depends. You probably know that all of Devin's work for Boost has been pro-bono -- if I understand correctly, all lawyers are obliged to do some -- you may not know that sometime last year, Devin's firm set up rules about what kinds of clients could qualify for pro-bono service, shifting the emphasis more towards social justice issues and traditional charities. In that context, free software doesn't quite make the cut. Devin has therefore been squeezing in Boost work voluntarily on the side, pursuing OSI license approval and tirelessly fielding tedious questions from potential users and their lawyers. Even though that had to be the least rewarding part of his work for us, Devin patiently answered every question, sometimes taking conference calls just to explain the license text. Devin has offered to try to help us find new representation (no guarantees, though). I'm also going to check back in with the Berkman Center; it'll definitely be important for us to have representation that undestands the open source world. We'll be very, very lucky if we can find anyone as capable and interested in our situation as Devin has been. Devin, the very best of luck with your new position. shared_ptr : how to build object chain shared_ptr down and weak_ptr up in object ctor?

I'd like to build a chain of objects with an upper layer holding a shared_ptr to a lower layer and the lower layer holding a weak_ptr back to the upper layer. The upper layer users the shared_ptr for control. The lower layer uses the weak_ptr for callbacks (first calling lock to convert it to a shared_ptr). And ... I'd like to do it in my class ctors. That's the kicker. It looks to me like the problem is there's no shared_ptr for CMaster itself, yet. We're still in the ctor, we have yet to return to main() to initialize "CIControlSPtr p". One answer is two-part initialization. First the ctor. Then a "bind" method to pass the fully-constructed shared_ptr down to the lower class to so it can initialize it's weak pointer back up. But it'd be nicer to do it in the ctor. For one thing, the weak_ptr can be const. I remember solving a similar problem creating COM objects wrapped in smart pointers by artificially bumping the refcount up (and down again) during object creation. But I haven't got my boost-brains sufficiently revved up to figure out if such a trick is possible in boost. Thanks, Tom Titchener
