Endian library - request for comments
by Beman Dawes 03 Jun '06

03 Jun '06

Back in 1999 and 2000, there was discussion of a Boost Endian library to provided portable big and little endian integer types. I've dusted off some old code from Darin Adler, gotten his permission to use the new Boost license, and have put together a library. A zip file of the whole library is available at http://mysite.verizon.net/~beman/endian.zip The docs can be read at http://mysite.verizon.net/~beman/endian.html Comments welcome! --Beman

[Boost-bugs] [ boost-Patches-1489359 ] [config] evc4 port

Patches item #1489359, was opened at 2006-05-16 07:38 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by msclrhd You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=307586&aid=1489359&group_… Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Michael Fink (vividos) Assigned to: John Maddock (johnmaddock) Summary: [config] evc4 port Initial Comment: This patch is a port for evc3/4 targeting Windows CE. Reason for the changes in auto_link.hpp: STLport with evc4 cannot be compiled in _STLP_DEBUG mode; the compiler issues wrong ARM code and _STLP_DEBUG mode cannot be used with evc4 ARM. I also introduced a new file wince.hpp in boost/config/platform/, since the defines in the _WIN32_WCE part got too big. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Reece H Dunn (msclrhd) Date: 2006-06-03 20:57 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=761714 I am working on providing support for WinCE platforms by extending the BBv2 msvc.jam toolset. See http://www.reece-dunn.co.uk for the updates. I am adding the -DARM, -DWINCE, etc. as required by the platforms as well as adding -machine:ARM4, etc. to the linker. It is still very much a work in progress, so help getting this working would be very much appreciated. - Reece ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: John Maddock (johnmaddock) Date: 2006-06-03 11:57 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=14804 Some more comments and questions: Shouldn't #ifndef _CPPUNWIND # error C++ Exception handling is not switched on, which is neccessary for Boost! Please add /GX to your compiler options. #endif be: #ifndef _CPPUNWIND # define BOOST_NO_EXCEPTIONS #endif I'm also concerned about hard coding the value of _WIN32_WINNT: this is very bad manners at the very least! Finally, shouldn't those C functions be defined in namespace std? I presume that the header needs to include <cstring> as well otherwise I don't see how it can possibly compile. John. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Mateusz Loskot (mloskot) Date: 2006-05-30 02:52 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=736047 Hi, Michael: Thanks for your effor to make Boost more Windows CE-friendly. Some time ago, I also started to use Boost with eVC++/VC++8. John: VC++ 8.0 brings the whole set of compilers for Winodows CE platform: clarm.exe, clmips.exe, etc. Here is a list with preprocessor macros to check target arch: http://www.smartphonedn.com/qa/checkos.html Here is a table that explains how to map devie arch from eVC++ 3/4 to VC++ 8.0: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnppcgen/h… Also, biuld system should define appropriate symbols: -D _ARM_ -D ARM -D _arm_ -D _MIPS_ -D MIPS -D _mips_ etc. Cheers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Michael Fink (vividos) Date: 2006-05-17 13:22 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=124874 The only change I made is to rename "evc8" to "msvc8-arm", but since I don't know exactly how to differentiate processors in msvc8 I simply put "msvc8-arm". A possible msvc8 porter has to decide that. I updated the patch since I found another issue: there's no static C runtime for Windows CE, so autolinking always chooses "-gdp" now. Please disregard the first patch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: John Maddock (johnmaddock) Date: 2006-05-17 09:51 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=14804 I notice that the patches are arm-specific, surely VC8 can be used to target other processors? Re: [boost] Infinite precision integer draft
by Topher Cooper 03 Jun '06

03 Jun '06

I don't think that it is that important to have unsigned_integer, but this argument against it doesn't stand up: 1) Unsigned integer is not just an arbitrary restriction on range but an important concept in its own right. Its use clarifies intent. In my opinion, for example, it is a common, though minor, programming error to use "int" rather than "unsigned int" when you intend to express cardinality of something (e.g., the size of an array). The only real justification otherwise is to allow such practical "tricks" as testing if a decreasing index is less than 0. 2) The extra data type, assuming that the design error of deriving unsigned_integer from integer is avoided, would add complexity for boost maintainers but virtually none for users. It is, after all a logical extension of the built in types -- it takes the user all of 5 seconds to understand it, if that. Good library design is user-centric. Developer-centric design is the root of a great deal of evil. Lack of development/maintenance resources is, of course, a valid argument, but this is a completely different issue than that of the evils of unnecessary complexity. 3) Normal use of an unsigned integer type will never "try" to produce a negative result -- its not a meaningful concept, so if you play by the rules it doesn't happen. You certainly would never try to negate a cardinality (how often do you write code that says "If this string contains 27 characters then I want another one containing -27 characters?). Subtraction does have to be done with care, but in most cases the issue of subtracting a larger from a smaller doesn't come up. Subtraction generally appears, sometimes subtly so, as a computation of the size of the complement of a subset within a larger set. If you are dealing with where you would want to use unsigned integers and you unwittingly do subtract a larger from a smaller value -- if your program logic does not protect you from it -- than you better have an exception. 4) If the exceptions are exceptional than in most systems it is very much more expensive to do an explicit test than to set up to handle an exception. Topher Cooper At 04:09 PM 6/2/2006, you wrote: >Unsigned integers shouldn't exist. Submission of an application to Who is Using Boost
by Boris Kolpackov 03 Jun '06

03 Jun '06

Hi, I would like to submit the following application for inclusion into the "Open Source Boost" section of the Who is Using Boost page: Application name: CodeSynthesis XML Schema to C++ Data Binding Compiler (XSD) Application page: http://codesynthesis.com/products/xsd/ Company name: Code Synthesis Tools CC Company page: http://codesynthesis.com Description: CodeSynthesis XML Schema to C++ Data Binding Compiler (XSD) is an open-source, cross-platform XML Data Binding implementation for C++. Provided with an XML instance specification (XML Schema), it generates C++ classes that represent the given vocabulary as well as parsing and serialization code. You can then access the data stored in XML using types and functions that semantically correspond to your application domain rather than dealing with elements, attributes, and text in a direct representation of XML such as DOM or SAX. XSD uses the Regex and Filesystem libraries from Boost. Regex is used to perform transformations on file, type and member names. Filesystem is used to capture and manipulate XML Schema include and import paths. Additionally, we are planning to provide an optional mapping of XML Schema date and time types to C++ types from the Boost Date Time library. thanks, -boris

[type_traits] Recent change broke serialization on Borland
by Nicola Musatti 03 Jun '06

Hallo, A recent change to remove_all_extents.hpp broke Spirit 1.6 and thus Serialization on Borland compilers. I think it should be reverted, unless Joel or Robert see a different solution. Cheers, Nicola Musatti

[wave[ Patch for samples Jamfile [.v2]
by Juergen Hunold 02 Jun '06

02 Jun '06

Hi ! I've attached a quick patch for the Jamfiles of libs/wave/samples/waveidl. Someone shortened the filename of "instantiate_re2c_lexer_string.cpp" to "instantiate_re2c_lexer_str.cpp" and forgot to adjust the Jamfiles. Okay to apply (on RC_1_34_0, too) ? It seems as though the OP may not be totally crazy, so we should evaluate his comments and see if the issues can be (or have been) addressed. The article is of course bad publicity for Boost, and I'd like to demonstrate responsiveness if possible. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com
