[random] uniform_int isn't uniform

Class uniform_int from <boost/random/uniform_int.hpp> is supposed to provide a uniform random integer distribution on a range [min, max]. (See [1].) It doesn't do that. I've attached a demonstration program, random.cc. The program asks uniform_int for integers in the range [0, 780903144], then sorts those integers into 20 equal buckets. If the random integers were uniformly distributed, the buckets would all get about the same number of elements. Instead, the last 5 buckets only get 2/3 as many numbers. To put it another way, in this specific case, uniform_int significantly under-represents the top 1/4 of its range. I've attached a patch to uniform_int.hpp that fixes the problem. signal_template.hpp:213 is: #if BOOST_WORKAROUND(BOOST_MSVC, <= 0x1700) What is 0x1700 supposed to mean here? The comment mentions 6.0 and 7.0, which correspond to 1200 and 1300 (decimal). This workaround disables disconnect() for non-groups on all versions of MSVC; doesn't this cause unexpected test failures? [off-topic] why do we not have std::copy_if?

I've recently wondered why std::copy doesn't have an analogous std::copy_if: template<class InIt, class OutIt, class Pr> OutIt *copy_if*(InIt first, InIt last, OutIt dest, Pr pred); that would copy elements to dest where the predicate returns true. Not unlike "grep" in Perl and "filter" in Python. The same goal can be achieved with std::remove_copy_if and the use of a sense-reversed predicate, but this leads to confusing code IMHO. Why wouldn't this be part of the Standard Library, or am I missing something ridiculously obvious? -- Caleb Epstein caleb dot epstein at gmail dot com
