boost::filesystem - directory_iterator makes optimization hard

Hi, I recently had a need to do directory lookups in C++ and thought I'd take a look at boost::filesystem. I ran the sample_ls.cpp from the documentation, and it worked great. The problem is that directory_iterator appears to return a pointer to a path object. This path object is then passed to functions such as is_directory() to find the type. On systems that support type information in the directory entry itself, this structure limits what data can be returned in an iteration. I would suggest something like (roughly): class path; class dirent; class directory_iterator { // ... const dirent * operator-> () const; // ... }; class dirent { // some easy method to convert to path operator path (); // or perhaps a safer method would just be // to duplicate the path functions const std::string & leaf() const; // etc. // and then possible optimized versions bool is_directory() const; // ... }; The members of dirent would mirror the available functions that use the path object. If no optimization is possible, it just calls what the user would have had to call anyway. But if it is possible to optimize certain items (such as a struct dirent containing d_type), this would be used, possibly saving a call to stat(). Normally optimization should be left as implementation details... but in this case, I believe the class design limits what optimization is allowed. I would be pleased if I'm wrong on this. [preprocessor] missing test case?

Proposal for std::numeric_limits<T>::max_digits10;

I attach links to a proposal for very tiny addition to the numeric_limits. It provides an easy way for the novice to ensure that all potentially significant digits are output. For example, for float 6 decimal digits are guaranteed, but 9 may be significant. This is used in Boost test, and should be useful for lexical_cast, serialization etc. Comments, objections, better name suggestions, etc welcome. Text_archives don't support integer types?

I'm using the CVS version of Boost from 2005-06-06, and it seems that text archives don't support anything except strings, characters, and the like, specifically not integer types like int. I've grepped the archive includes, and it seems that there are no save methods specified for the integer types (except char) by the text archives, and I get compiler errors like: c:\D2\API\NewClient\EnhancedMessageHandler.h(370) : error C2679: binary '<<' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'int' (or there is no acceptable conversion) (with VC7.1) It works when the RHS of << is a variable, but not when it is a function. I take it that this is because with variables, a string is automatically constructed to wrap the int types. This is very confusing, and might well be worth mentioning in the docs. I changed the /EHsc to /EHac which seems to affect none of the tests excep the errors test on VC-8_0 which now works I've tested it with 7.1 and 8.0 I don't have any other complers btw, why is the /EHac (now) put in the command line twice? once as part of CFLAGS and once directly??
