It seems as though path simplification doesn't deal correctly with "."?
assert.result "foo/giz" : join "foo/giz" "." ;
I am reconsidering my issue of the argument order to the "root" rule:
root $(my-path) : $(some-root)
makes more sense to me now. Sorry for the noise.
