--v2 problems on vc7.1

for the past 2 days, I've been getting this as the sole output of my bjam 
--v2 run overnight.

C:\Projects\boost>bjam --v2
XXX
...patience...
...found 961 targets...
...updating 78 targets...
gcc.compile.c++ bin\libs\test\build\gcc\debug\link-static\execution_monitor.o
spawn: No such file or directory

although I _do_ have gcc installed (devcpp AND cygwin) I haven't yet 
figured out how to get those folded into my overnight tests
any thoughts on _that_ problem would be greatly appreciated
