VC8 June CTP and Beta2 set up VS80COMNTOOLS. I'll check this later when
I get my VS DVD back. I lent my DVD-RW to a friend and forgot to take
the disk out of the drive.

Do you mean compilers, or toolsets here? I can see that CW uses cwenv.bat.
