building 1.33.0 with mingw: invalid target caused by brackets?

After failing with "spawn: invalid target" a couple of
times I googled for "boost mingw" and found this
article:

Sure enough, when I added "-d+4" to the list of
options, the same extraneous brackets & quotation
marks appear. What do I do to get rid of them? Will
any fixes make it to 1.33.1?
