Thanks, that works.  And I see where my initial confusion was: I was
looking at 'git log' and expecting a (mostly) linear history, but
apparently one of the commits had two parents, one of which was in
2011.  Had I continued scrolling I'd have seen the end of that part of
the history and the switch to the more recent branch.
