It was a stupid bug. Here's the Mac OS X installer:

  http://www.osl.iu.edu/~dgregor/Boost-CMake/Boost-1.36.0-Darwin.dmg

This particular installer runs on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and newer.
