I'd suggest to start with reading the Boost GSoC materials from
previous years, see all the pages under "Google Summer of Code"

Look at the list of projects from the past years, there you will also
find competency tests.

Next, try to use and experiment with GIL,
follow the README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md,
the Wiki pages, the docs (linked from the README).
Finally, you need to think about
what you are interested in
what kind of project would
you like to develop for GIL.
