Bad excuses only.  The first date iterators pre-dated iterator adaptors.
When I sat down to convert things over it was 'less-than easy'.  I read
the docs and experimented, but couldn't get things working -- this might
have been related to 2.9x series of compilers I was using at the time,
but no matter.  When I ran out of patience I just dropped it and never
got back to it.  It has been on my 'todo' list ever since...
