Thank you for replying - tools/ was missing. appearently
/usr/bin/tar could not handle the long filenames.
I should have suspected the 'directory checksum error' when
un-tarring. I installed gnu tar 1.14, that un-tarred the file
A-OK and I now have tools/ and it is now building.
(...patience...)
