I can tell you that on a fedora/redhat box, you just include the headers and
you are away. If you installed the development package group it will be
there and you can build c++ programs and use boost out of the box. What
distro are you using?

Which library are you wanting to enhance the efficacy of your hello world
program with? Most (all?) the boost libs documentation include usage and
simple examples.
