After ./configure, I manually modify the Makefile.
I add:
BJAM_CONFIG=-d2 link=static threading=single runtime-link=shared --layout=system
LIBS=release

and then make install...

Thanks - that's what I was looking for! I used the ./configure && make build
process, and that doesn't seem to be an option in there.
