[Boost-users] Install: recommended directory for boost-root?

I'm installing Boost on a Mac (OS 10.5.1). I realize that I could put  
the libraries just about anywhere, but is there a recommended  
directory for the Boost root? Some possibilities I've considered  
include /opt/local/lib/Boost, opt/local/var/Boost, /Library/Boost, / 
local/bin/Boost, /local/share/Boost ...

Where do you normally install your "third-party" libraries and why?  
Does the recommended location depend on platform (i.e. Linux, Win, Mac)?
