I've now had a much better look at the Bentley-Ottmann algorithm and can 
see now why it could make a significant performance improvement. I'm 
also wondering if the event queue may also be manipulated to better 
manage complex intersection management too. Anyhow, all this would 
require a very major rewrite, so maybe it'll be something to look at in 
a few months time.
