I had the same problem using 1.48 after upgrading gcc to 4.8 a few weeks ago. I found a bug report (although I can't find it now) to say it was a configuration issue and the patch was committed in 1.49.

I upgraded to 1.53 and compiled with gcc 4.8 and everything now seems fine.
