puts copyright notice with his name and that's it.
As an example, OSGeo gives the following suggestion:

"It may be desirable to seek copyright assignment to a "project lead",
or to the foundation to reduce the number of copyright holders for the
project, although this is not required."

You mean author as an individual who created (started) particular file,
right? I think it's a good compromise.
