Yeah, well, their documentation also tends to lack crucial detail.
I've seen lots of Python docs that talk about "File-like" objects
without defining what that is precisely. They don't seem to have
gotten Concepts yet.
So, Python might make a good starting point... just make sure you
don't end there, too ;-)
