Sorry, couldn't resist. I really don't won't to criticize too much, but even a short notice explaining why it takes so long is completely missing. Not that the issue itself would be important to me, but complete absence of communication is not good.
And all proposals to improve the review process silently ignored this sort of real world issues, which probably boil down to time and resources in the end.
