[tribool] short-circuting issue with overloads of operator|| and operator&&

Hi, I've just used a tribool and a null pointer together in an if-expression: if (a_tribool || *a_bool_pointer) ... leading to an access violation, because operator || is overloaded for tribool and dereferencing the pointer occurs before calling operator || instead of short-circuiting the expression. Is this by design and do I have to access the tribool's 'value' member directly? Thanks, Klaus Triendl

[serialization] Binary archive STL container template specialization?

Greetings everyone, I need to stream a data over a very small data connection (think cell-phones and GPRS). The type of data will vary, but will typically contain strings, numbers, and short groups of these basic types. The application on both ends of the pipe will be written in C++, so I've loosely decided on the boost::serialization library as it virtually eliminates all of the code I would have needed to manually write. (Awesome!) I've made up a bunch of test archives, and I'd like to get some feedback on a possible optimization, or at least specialization, of the code that streams out STL collections. The current serialization methodology for STL containers saves the size of the container followed by each item inside the container. This code is also used for std::string as it behaves like an STL container of characters. The down-side of this is that each string uses a minimum of 8 bytes (32-bit integer) plus the string payload. Proposal: Write out a single byte that indicates the number of elements to follow. If the number of elements is 255 or more, write out a single byte 0xF, followed by the size_type indicating the correct count. Reading follows the same pattern in reverse. Read a single byte. If the byte is 0xF, read size_type, otherwise you have the count. Simple example from my problem domain: If I have a list of three-letter bin locations in a warehouse and each bin contains a quantity of a specific item, I will have the following data to send: DER: 427 ALU: 582 COM: 821 TER: 991 FLO: 0 TER: 298 ALP: 332 PED: 773 Using the boost serialization framework, that data becomes 160 bytes (8 for the size, 8+length for each string, and 8 for each integer). Using my proposal, the data size drops to 97 bytes, nearly 60% in data reduction. I theorize that many serialized strings and collections are less than 255 items or characters (especially in my problem domain) and that this technique will save us many on-the-wire bytes over time. A) Do you think this is a reasonable addition/modification to the serialization library? B) Is there any way to add this functionality to the serialization library without breaking existing archives? I see a call to get_library_version in the code, but I'm not sure what is the purpose of this statement. Anyone? Thanks, Eric

Is there any easy way to assign values to a boost::multi_array? boost::multi_array<double, 2> abd(boost::extents[4][33]); abd[0][0] = 1.00; abd[0][1] = 0.00; abd[0][2] = 0.00; abd[0][3] = 0.10; .. I would like to do abd = boost::assign::list_of(1.00)(0.00)(0.00)(0.10) But realize this might be a little more tricky with higher dimensions but still possible. Lars

I have used constrained_value to prototype a fixed-pt class. It seems to be developing nicely. One thing might be useful is to have the option to record minimum and maximum values that are used during a given computation. I'm wondering how to add a facility to track extremal values. It would seem to be nice to add it into the 'value' member itself, but I suspect this concept doesn't really fit with the constrained_value design.

Hello, a number of platforms currently fail to compile these tests with an error message similar to the following: cxx: Error: ../boost/thread/pthread/thread.hpp, line 169: more than one instance of overloaded function "boost::bind" matches the argument list: (ambovlfun) function template "boost::bind<R,F,A1>(F, A1)" function template "boost::bind(R (T::*)(), A1)" The code in question reads: template <class F,class A1> thread(F f,A1 a1): thread_info(make_thread_info(boost::bind<void>(f,a1))) { start_thread(); } and it is used like this (in test_lock_concept.cpp): struct ... { void locking_thread() { ... } ... void operator()() { .... boost::thread t(&this_type::locking_thread,this); } }; Looking at the bind documentation, the syntax for using bind with pointers to members is either bind(&X::f, args) or bind<R>(mem_fn(&X::f), args) So there are three possible fixes: 1) make_thread_info(boost::bind(f,a1)) 2) make_thread_info(boost::bind<void>(mem_fn(f),a1)) 3) boost::thread t(mem_fn(&this_type::locking_thread),this); Every one of those makes the compile error go away. Option 1) might be the most flexible, 2) is probably too restrictive, and 3) is the least intrusive, as it only modifies the tests. Would the thread maintainer please decide on a fix and then commit it? Best regards, Markus
